Title: Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Administration
Primary Functions: The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Administration oversees the broad areas of research administration: Sponsored Programs; Research Compliance, Conflict of Interest, Research Development Services, and central administrative services. This includes overall leadership and oversight, responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the $400 million-per-year research enterprise, and the coordination and integration of programs to ensure responsiveness to the
overall research needs of UIC faculty, staff and students engaged in research. This position represents the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research in support of development and enhancement of campus-wide research initiatives.
Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for planning, coordination, implementation and management of sponsored research programs and activities across the broad spectrum and portfolio of UIC sponsored research activities.
- Serve as the key administrative liaison between the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and campus offices, the broad campus research community and external constituencies.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and leader in the delivery of research administration services and programs across the campus.
- Provide leadership coordination and supervisory management for the research administrative units in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research including strategic planning, budget oversight, analytical trend analysis, and performance management.
- Provides assistance to the Vice Chancellor with the development and implementation of strategic plans and policies regarding the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
- Direct efforts to effectively manage and monitor compliance with all Federal/State/University research policies, procedures and practices.
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification and/or Masters or other advanced degree is preferred. Six to ten years of progressively advanced experience in administering federally sponsored research programs is required. Upper-level pre-award
- Work closely with academic leaders, faculty and staff to create policies and procedures that facilitate the University's continued commitment to research excellence.
administration management experience in a public university or in a private/non-profit environment is preferred. Minimum five years progressive experience managing professional staff at a major research
university.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge with research compliance issues including OMB Circulars, conflict of interest and export control is preferred. Possess an in-depth knowledge of electronic research administration such as Grants ERA, NSF Fast Lane and Grants.gov.
Leadership skills, including creativity and initiative, to conceptualize, plan and implement programs that support research, and ensure accountability and compliance. Possess excellent analytical, written and interpersonal communication skills. Strong project management skills, and the ability to balance multiple projects. Maintain effective working relations with management of all levels, colleagues and other strategic partners.
