DESCRIPTION:
The Planning and Development Department is seeking two Planners-Urban Design to fill new positions supporting regional neighborhood planning or strategic planning.  The level and salary for both positions will be determined by experience.

The Planner II/III (Urban Designer) will develop and present creative urban design concepts; review or assist in review of moderately difficult development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes and urban design excellence standards; provide design input, strategy, support; engage deeply in community processes.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Planner II and Planner III -- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in urban planning, architecture, public policy, or a closely related field.

Experience
 
Planner II
  • Two (2) years of professional experience involving planning/urban planning, architecture/ landscape architecture, or urban design.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with integrated word processing and spreadsheet functions.
Planner III
  • Three (3) years of experience in urban design.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with integrated word processing and spreadsheet functions.
License/Certificates
Possession of an American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification through the American Planning Association may be required.

Equivalency

The first opening is for a Land Planning & Mapping Specialist. The City is seeking someone who is adept at both the conceptual master planning and detailed site planning aspects of comprehensive land planning. This position also provides opportunities to design, build, maintain, and utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and databases to support the planning efforts of the Department.

The second opening is for a Neighborhood Planner. This position is primarily responsible for providing professional level planning support for established neighborhoods and special project planning efforts. It will also involve a variety of related neighborhood support activities and other professional planning level assignments, as well as data and information gathering, analysis and presentation. This position requires the ability to effectively engage a wide variety of citizen and stakeholder groups.

The third opening is for two limited term employment (LTE) Planner 1 or 2 level Planners anticipated to last through 2017. These two positions will focus on all phases of updating the City of Madison's Comprehensive Plan. The Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2006 and State Statutes require that it be updated every ten years. The positions involve responsible professional land use planning, research, and administrative support work in the Planning Division of the Department of Planning and Community and Economic Development as part of an interdisciplinary team. Community Investment Corporation (CIC) has created the John Pritscher Fellowship in Community Development to give a recent graduate a combination of practical and theoretical experience in housing and community development. The position will provide exposure to a wide range of community development activities, including:

local neighborhood planning

building code enforcement

acquisition/assembly of properties for redevelopment

mapping and Geographic Information Systems

development and implementation of re-use strategies for distressed properties

affordable housing finance

development of neighborhood marketing campaigns.

The Fellow will have the opportunity to accomplish specific tasks and to expand his/her skills while working at the forefront of community development in Chicago. In particular, the Fellow will play a key role in the development and implementation of redevelopment strategies for West Woodlawn and East Chatham, two neighborhoods targeted under the City of Chicago's Micro Market Recovery Program.

Compensation

The Department of Geography and City and Regional Planning is accepting applications for a tenure-track position in Community Development and/or Land-Use Planning. The successful candidate will teach planning classes, as well as general education classes. Overview : 
The Department of Geography and City and Regional Planning is a student-centered department and one of nine departments and programs in the College of Social Sciences. The department offers a BA degree in Geography, a minor in Meteorology, a minor in Interdisciplinary Urban Studies, and an option in City and Regional Planning; and is also developing an online Certificate of Advanced Study in Community and Regional Planning that it hopes to be made available to students in 2016. Part of the department's five-year plan is to create a separate BS degree in City and Regional Planning. The course offerings support undergraduate preparation for careers in environmental study, teaching, weather, regional and urban planning, and preparation for graduate work. The department boasts the most internationally diverse faculty in the university and takes pride in its scholarly excellence. Faculty research is supported by state of the art facilities in two of its laboratories: environmental research and GIS/Remote sensing laboratories.
