The AARP Associate State Director for Community is a frontline voice and presence with the 50+ public, AARP members and volunteers, targeted audiences including multicultural audiences, stakeholders and partners.
In this role you will execute relevant metro community-based experiences for members and multicultural/diverse audiences and 50+; execute, lead and/or coordinate the metro team's campaign and advocacy efforts to influence local, state, and federal policy, leveraging volunteer teams and external partners; recruit, orient, train, and engage volunteers; cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with third parties in the metro market, with services, community, advocacy, and volunteer organizations, across public, private and social/non-profit sectors; build strong, collaborative working relationships with metro market team and Matrix leads; participate as an active member of the Metro team with an eye to achieving metro-markets goals and vision.
Requires completion of a Bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration, political science, public policy, sociology, or related discipline and 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position; ability to communicate effectively with different audiences, as the context may vary to the media, policymakers, volunteers and/or other external stakeholders; understanding of public policy issues facing the state and AARP membership; demonstrated high level of competence with oral and written communication, computer literacy, social media, strategic thinking, and relationship management skills. Understanding of the state's political and community service and engagement environments; previous government relations and grassroots organizing experience and experience working with volunteer structures. Experience implementing programs for multicultural audiences preferred; Bilingual language skills preferred. Local/in state travel required up to 50% of the time.

Part-time Program Manager, Launch U - Chicago, IL


LAUNCH U (www.launchu.org) is college prep mentoring program that helps underserved but highly motivated scholars through the college application process and in preparation for college life and beyond. Launch U accomplishes our mission by engaging young professionals in our network with high-impact mentor opportunities working directly with high school scholars to help them with all aspects of preparing for college. At the core of our program is providing each scholar with an individual mentor to work with and guide him or her through the entire college application and selection process.

Launch U is seeking a part-time program manager to join the organization and oversee
Duties and Responsibilities:
  •   In conjunction with Launch U’s Executive Director, manage and coordinate all facets of college prep program
  •   Assist mentor and scholar pairs to meet and exceed their expectations within the program parameters
  •   Monitor scholar progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities
  •   Help to determine innovative strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement actions
    plans, and evaluate the process and results
  •   Lead and facilitate on-site sessions hosted at Launch U’s office on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings (up to
    twice a month)
    Requirements:
  •   Demonstrated passion for and experience working with adolescent youth in an educational/mentoring capacity
  •   A minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  •   Current position working in the educational/non-profit sector and/or pursuit of graduate degree in field is a strong plus
  •   Some prior experience with program management and/or curriculum development
  •   Strong leadership, strategic thinking, initiative, problem solving skills and creative ability
  •   Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
  •   Excellent interpersonal communication skills and an outgoing personality
  •   Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel and PowerPoint) and Data Analysis

    Compensation:
    Compensation includes a competitive stipend commensurate with skills and experience, along with an incentive bonus based on performance. Potential advancement opportunities, including a full time position as Launch U expands in 2015, is also a possibility based on performance.

The Department of Community Development provides the following services: Building Division, Code Enforcement, Community Services, Passport, Permit Center, and Planning Division. Under the direction of the Mayor, the Community Development Director plans, organizes, coordinates and directs long range planning activities, development review, human services activities, and neighborhood development activities.
Master’s degree in urban planning, civil engineering, building technology, business administration, economics, or related field, and five years of increasingly responsible management experience related to long range planning, land use planning, environmental review, development review, economic development, downtown development and commercial real estate, human services, neighborhood development, building inspection and/or code enforcement, including significant experience managing complex projects, and at least five years in a supervisory capacity.  AICP certification preferred.
