33rd Ward Aldermanic Internship
Position Title: Public Safety Intern
The Alderman’s office in the 33rd Ward is seeking students who want to acquire knowledge and valuable work experience in public sector/city government operations. As an intern, you will
gain a unique insight into the workings of city government with an emphasis on problem buildings, public safety and code enforcement. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, organized and has good verbal and written communication skills. This position will report to and often work directly with the Chief of Staff.
Responsibilities of Student Intern:
● Take calls and in person complaints pertaining to problems regarding houses, buildings, and businesses.
● Maintain active records of problem buildings, houses, businesses, foreclosures, vacant lots, and demolition/construction sites.
● Review monthly Administrative Hearing Reports for known problem buildings and follow them through the court system, updating necessary aldermanic staff and community members of court dates.
● Use online public records to research ownership of buildings and vacant lots.
● Update vacant building information on ward website.
● Enter public service request into 311 server as it relates to problem buildings.
● Communicate with multiple city departments including Department of Buildings, Business and Consumer Affairs, Department of Revenue, Police, Ward Superintendent, Streets and Sanitation regarding inspection requests for vacant buildings, illegal businesses, garage demolition and building violations.
● Take notes and help lead monthly 33rd Ward Transportation Action Committee (TAC) meetings.
● Communicate with Chicago Department of Transportation and Bike Ambassadors representatives regarding matters brought up at TAC meetings.
● Perform various administrative functions to support aldermanic staff and other duties as assigned throughout the office.
● Some traveling throughout the Ward is required; ownership of a car or bicycle would be helpful but not required.
Skills Desired: ● Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner. ● Reception skills to be able answer calls and transfer calls using a multi-line phone system, take written messages and direct walk-in clients. ● Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments. ● Computer proficiency utilizing the internet for research, completion of forms and printing information and forms. ● Good verbal and written communication so that information is relayed in a clear concise manner.
● Ability to show sensitivity and patience with difficult populations (landlord/tenant disputes). ● Willingness to accept direction, work independently and work in a group. ● Ability to handle a variety of situations. ● Ability to analyze and evaluate situations and exercise sound judgment. ● Bilingual preferred.
Duration of Employment: 6-12 months
Pay: $13 an hour
Hours: 13 hours a week
Preferred Start Date: August 18th, 2014
