NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES ADVOCATE
ALDERMAN CARLOS RAMIREZ- ROSA, 35TH WARD, CITY OF CHICAGO
DESCRIPTION:
to serve the thirty-fifth ward’s residents as a Neighborhood Services Advocate. The Neighborhood
Services Advocate will assist the Neighborhood Services Director in the delivery of timely and
quality resident services; acts as a liaison to municipal, state, county and federal agencies for the
Alderman and residents; answers the telephone and answers resident requests for general
information, and other inquiries; and answers casework correspondence and verbal
communications with residents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● A minimum of an associate’s degree preferred. Alternatively, two years of related
experience;
● Ability to perform essential job duties below;
● Compassion and respect for all people;
● Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with others;
● Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and
professional manner;
● Excellent organizational skills;
● Professional telephone manner;
● Excellent oral and written communication skills;
● Knowledge of office computer applications;
● English-Spanish bilingual; and
● Knowledge of municipal, county, state, and federal agencies and departments preferred.
DUTIES:
● Answers telephone calls and takes messages when appropriate;
● Greets visitors to the ward office;
● Assists persons who have appointments and works closely with the Chief of Staff to
ensure that the Alderman’s appointments are on time and that the Alderman and Chief of
Staff are aware of the visitor's arrival;
● Drafts both form and individual responses to resident mail and email in coordination with
the Neighborhood Services Director and Legislative and Policy Director;
● Assists with processing of resident mail;
● Responds to resident requests for information;
● Maintains ward office reception area;
● Documents resident opinions on issues communicated via telephone, including full name,
address, and all relevant information as appropriate;
● Answers resident letters and helps residents with service requests;
● Responds to resident calls and e-mail, and handles casework assignments;
● Acts as a liaison to municipal, county, state and federal officials and other persons or
groups to form effective relationships for the Alderman;
● Assesses casework for problems requiring legislation and makes recommendations;
● Screens and refers cases, when appropriate, to other agencies and offices;
● Meets attendance requirements as established by the office;
● Maintains a good working relationship with the Alderman, staff, and residents;
● Works well under pressure and handles stress;
● Accepts performance-based criticism and direction;
● Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights and weekends; and
● Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS & COMPENSATION:
● This is a full-time hourly position with a health stipend;
● You must be a resident of the City of Chicago in order to apply;
● Work is performed in an office environment. Noise levels are usually moderate;
● Ability to work in a shared office space without an expectation of privacy;
● The ideal start date is December 2022.

Assistant Director of Community Development - Office of Alderman Dan La Spata
What: Description: Alderman Daniel La Spata seeks an equity minded, hardworking and task-oriented person to serve as the Assistant Director of Community Development of the 1st Ward, reporting directly to the 1st Ward Chief of Staff. They are responsible for operation and implementation of internal and external administrative duties including office budget, letters of support and Aldermanic scheduling. They maintain relationships with 1st Ward senior citizens, Chicago Park District, volunteer neighborhood associations, individuals experiencing homelessness, CAPS office and restorative justice groups.
33rd Ward Aldermanic Internship (PAID)- Chicago, IL
Position Title: Public Safety Intern
The Alderman’s office in the 33rd Ward is seeking students who want to acquire knowledge and valuable work experience in public sector/city government operations. As an intern, you will
gain a unique insight into the workings of city government with an emphasis on problem buildings, public safety and code enforcement. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, organized and has good verbal and written communication skills. This position will report to and often work directly with the Chief of Staff.
Responsibilities of Student Intern:
● Take calls and in person complaints pertaining to problems regarding houses, buildings, and businesses.
● Maintain active records of problem buildings, houses, businesses, foreclosures, vacant lots, and demolition/construction sites.
● Review monthly Administrative Hearing Reports for known problem buildings and follow them through the court system, updating necessary aldermanic staff and community members of court dates.
● Use online public records to research ownership of buildings and vacant lots.
● Update vacant building information on ward website.
● Enter public service request into 311 server as it relates to problem buildings.
● Communicate with multiple city departments including Department of Buildings, Business and Consumer Affairs, Department of Revenue, Police, Ward Superintendent, Streets and Sanitation regarding inspection requests for vacant buildings, illegal businesses, garage demolition and building violations.
● Take notes and help lead monthly 33rd Ward Transportation Action Committee (TAC) meetings.
● Communicate with Chicago Department of Transportation and Bike Ambassadors representatives regarding matters brought up at TAC meetings.
● Perform various administrative functions to support aldermanic staff and other duties as assigned throughout the office.
● Some traveling throughout the Ward is required; ownership of a car or bicycle would be helpful but not required.
Skills Desired: ● Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner. ● Reception skills to be able answer calls and transfer calls using a multi-line phone system, take written messages and direct walk-in clients. ● Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments. ● Computer proficiency utilizing the internet for research, completion of forms and printing information and forms. ● Good verbal and written communication so that information is relayed in a clear concise manner.
● Ability to show sensitivity and patience with difficult populations (landlord/tenant disputes). ● Willingness to accept direction, work independently and work in a group. ● Ability to handle a variety of situations. ● Ability to analyze and evaluate situations and exercise sound judgment. ● Bilingual preferred.
Duration of Employment: 6-12 months
Pay: $13 an hour
Hours: 13 hours a week
Preferred Start Date: August 18th, 2014
