GIS Specialist I

Under the direction of the Director of Resource Management or designee, utilizes geographic information systems (GIS) and cartographic skills and techniques to assist in the development and maintenance of the District’s natural resource GIS. Assists in the research, development, maintenance, and output of GIS databases. Assists in the training of District personnel who use the GIS databases or software. Assists in the research and application process for grants. Performs other duties as directed.

Typical Duties 

Utilizes GIS and cartographic skills and techniques to assist in the development and maintenance of the Department of Resource Management’s natural resource GIS, mainly as it relates to science, resource management, and land management information.

Assists in the preparation of high quality graphics, maps and topographics for the Department of Resource Management’s use.

Assists in the research, maintenance, metadata creation, and output of the Department of Resource Management’s GIS.

Assists in the design and creation of various GIS applications for the Department of Resource Management.

Assists in training of Department and District personnel who use the District’s GIS.

Coordinates with District GIS Manager to ensure compatibility with District software and systems.

Provides working maps and documents to engineers, landscape architects, planners, ecologists, wildlife biologists, fisheries biologists, resource management leadership, trail designers, and other professional staff and consultants.
Minimum Qualifications 

Must possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in geography, computer science, geology, regional or urban planning, landscape architecture, a land based social science, or a substantially similar area from an accredited college or university.

Must possess one (1) or more years of professional work experience in related disciplines and processes utilizing ArcGIS software.

Must possess a current valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics 

Skill and proficiency with GIS software as an editing, plotting, and analysis tool.

Ability to create and design relational databases.

Knowledge of related disciplines and processes, such as remote sensing, image processing, global positioning systems (GPS), cartography, drafting, graphic arts, surveying, internet/intranet.

Demonstrated experience working within the fields of ecology, land management, or natural resource management.

Knowledge of natural systems of Illinois.

Ability to understand and work with biological and ecological data.

Ability to manage numerous projects at one time.

Ability to work independently, to be resourceful, and to make sound judgments based on available information.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate and work collaboratively with others.

General District Employment Requirements 

PROOF OF EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES WILL BE REQUIRED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW.MUST BE A RESIDENT OF COOK COUNTY OR ESTABLISH RESIDENCY IN COOK COUNTY WITHIN SIX (6) MONTHS OF EMPLOYMENT AND REMAIN A RESIDENT AT ALL TIMES DURING EMPLOYMENT WITH THE DISTRICT.
