Public Administration Faculty Positions, Univ. of La Verne and American University

The Department of Public and Health Administration of the *University of La Verne’s College of Business and Public Management* is seeking an Assistant Professor of Public Administration. This is a full time, tenure track position beginning July 1, 2014 (courses start late August). The position could begin as early as January 1, 2014, depending on the availability of applicants. The Department is committed to enhancing social and environmental justice and increasing community engagement in the Southern California region.

The Department of Public and Health Administration was created in 1979, has over 1,400 alumni, and has a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). The Department also offers a doctorate program (DPA) that has cultivated scholarly practitioners for over 25 years. The Department has eight full-time faculty and offers undergraduate, master and doctoral programs to a highly diverse student population.

The University of La Verne is a 120 year-old independent institution of higher learning located 35 miles east of Los Angeles at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, in the City of La Verne. *Specific Duties*

The workload is split into 60/30/10 with teaching representing 60% of the workload, research and scholarly activities for 30%, and community service and community engagement for 10%. Faculty is expected to teach six courses per year at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.

*Minimum Qualifications*

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. in Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field. Candidates with an expected completion date of June 2014 are encouraged to apply.**

The Department’s primary interest is to hire a candidate who has a commitment to teaching quantitative analysis, research design and methodologies to graduate students. In addition, this candidate would ideally have teaching interests in one or more of the following additional areas: organizational change and development, program evaluation, community development, public management, and/or civic engagement.

Candidates with government or nonprofit work experience, teaching experience, and an established research record are also of special interest.

*American University’s School of Public Affairs* invites applications from scholars conducting significant research in the areas of health policy and urban/metropolitan governance. These two positions are part of the school’s strategic expansion of research and teaching focused on health policy, security policy, and urban/metropolitan governance. The positions will be housed in the Department of Public Administration and Policy and will begin in August 2014. Both appointments will be made with tenure at the rank of associate or full professor. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to play a critical role in helping to shape the university’s expanding research programs in these areas.

*Qualifications*

Applicants must meet the university’s standards for appointment with tenure at the associate or full professor level. Applicants should have a PhD and a strong record of research in health policy or urban/metropolitan governance. Candidates with a record of funded research or leadership experience in university research centers or institutes are strongly preferred.

*Duties*

The appointed individuals will have research, teaching, and service expectations commensurate with appointed rank. Primary teaching duties will be in the school’s Master of Public Administration, Master of Public Policy, and PhD programs. The individuals will also be expected to collaborate across units to strengthen the university’s research programs in health policy or urban/metropolitan governance, as well as mentor junior faculty and doctoral students doing work in these areas.
