Summary of Position:
The Office of Technology Management (OTM) is looking for graduate students
interested in the commercialization of university research to join the Office as
Technology Commercialization Analysts. The OTM manages intellectual property
generated by UIC researchers and provides services to faculty, staff, and students
that include IP identification, evaluation, protection, marketing, and licensing.
Technology Commercialization Analysts participate in many aspects of the technology
commercialization process, with a focus on screening new disclosures to the office
and evaluating the commercial landscape. Working with the OTM provides valuable
technology management and evaluation experience along with exposure to some of UIC's
most exciting technologies.
Assigned projects will likely include the following: searching for potential
commercialization markets conducting searches of existing patents and academic
articles, and evaluation of discoveries in terms of stage of development. The
Technology Commercialization Analyst will use web based business and scientific
databases, as well as library tools to collect data necessary to complete the
research. Thorough training will be provided.
Please note: This position requires a consistent commitment of 15 - 20 hours per
week. Please only apply if you are willing to make this commitment. Students who
currently have 50% TA hours or are on GA support are ineligible to accept this
position.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Candidate must be enrolled in a PhD or Masters program in a UIC science program
• Candidate must have a solid understanding of general scientific principles and
have domain expertise in the biomedical or health field.
• Preference will be given to candidates with medical, drug discovery or
bioengineering focus.
• Previous experience and demonstrated competency in searching databases is highly
preferred. Experience in PUBMED and other scientific journal data mining is
critical.
Required Skills:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Science background, specifically chemistry ,biology, bioengineering.
• Computer skills, including basic MS PowerPoint and Excel proficiency
• Critical thinking skills
• Good time management skills, including ability to balance job projects and school
requirements
• Ability to consistently and reliably work 15 - 20 hrs per week
• Candidate must also demonstrate flexibility in screening technologies in areas
outside of areas of expertise but within related health sciences.
Essential Functions:
• Screen new inventions disclosed by University faculty and staff
• With technology managers, interview inventors to clarify technology disclosure
details including market applications, stage of development, future interest in
development, and potential licensees
• Assist OTM technology managers in the further assessment and marketing of
technologies that are in advanced stages of the commercialization process
• Perform preliminary market and industry analysis for the applications of new
technologies
• Perform prior art research for new technologies
• Conduct thorough research on the potential market, narrow the scope of interest to
the main market participants, and estimate the type and size of competition, trends
and emerging technologies
• Create a list of potential licensees and their contact information
• Develop technology screening reports that outline the screening decision and
supporting research for technologies
• Present findings in a report form to OTM staff, faculty or others in review
sessions and meetings
• Assist with marketing activities for high potential technologies.
Additional Information:
Training Provided Successful candidate will be trained by OTM in searching Patent
and Commercial databases for prior art and commercial potential research. Screeners
will have the opportunity to participate in special projects as skills develop and
project availability allow.
