ISTC is seeking to hire a Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Coastal Studies to provide scientific, technical, and project management support for coastal management program (CMP) objectives to address coastal hazards and build community resilience, improve coastal habitats, and enhance sustainable economic development and coastal recreation. This position is based in Chicago, Illinois.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Help coastal communities improve their capacity to prepare for and manage coastal hazards including shoreline change and flooding Assist with planning, coordination, implementation, and facilitation of regional working groups.
  • Translate scientific information for non-technical audience and develop communication tools such as visualizations (e.g., maps, videos), blogs, public presentations, and field trips that explain coastal processes and hazards.
  • Develop resources for stakeholders that support more effective planning and decision-making. Partner with federal, state, and local agencies on Great Lakes or lake wide resilience efforts.
  • Work with federal, state, and local agencies to improve coordination, understand funding opportunities, and determine strategies to improve coastal management.
  • Assist in developing responses to federal, state, commercial, and foundation funding opportunities.
  • Develop project scopes and work plans, ensure timely and effective project implementation. Prepare or assist with development and preparation of grant and contract reports.
  • Monitor progress on project outcomes and deliverables.
  • Prepare and present project reports.
  • Assist and coordinate with staff on coastal geology and shoreline change monitoring and studies.
  • Support new and ongoing projects to protect coastal habitat on public owned lands.
  • Design, develop, and support mapping projects and products to improve spatial understanding of coastal areas.
  • Provide communications expertise to build the CMP brand, share programmatic, partner, and grantee successes, and raise the profile of Illinois as a coastal tourism destination
  • Perform project and content management to improve the CMP website or other topic specific sites.
  • Build the program’s social media presence.
  • Assist with monthly coastal newsletter.
  • Develop other communication pieces for partners, articles, websites, and social media.
  • Plan and attend trainings, workshops, professional meetings, and other opportunities to increase skills and knowledge.
  • Work jointly with a number of varied constituencies while observing standards of professional conduct. 
  • Communicate with people within and outside the Survey, representing the Survey to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
  • Contribute in the areas of education, outreach, and/or other service to the Survey, PRI, the University of Illinois, and the state of Illinois.
  • Enhance the reputation of the Survey and PRI at the state, national, and international level.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in marine or coastal science or management, coastal geology, environmental sciences such as biology, management, policy or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be accepted/considered based upon the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. At least two years’ experience working in the field of coastal or Great Lakes management, policy, or related field with bachelor’s degree. Experience writing or preparing clear and understandable scientific or technical reports, proposals, public communication pieces, and giving oral presentations. Complex project and partnership management experience. Must have an understanding of Lake Michigan or Great Lakes ecological systems, coastal and great lakes environmental policies or regulatory framework. Complex problem solving and decision-making skills. Ability to organize and execute complex projects and meet deadlines. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly-employed software and databases. This position will involve traveling to attend meetings and conduct environmental field work. Field work will include driving to and from research sites, some of which may under adverse conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.). Must be willing to travel overnight within and outside the state of Illinois. Position involves lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 35 pounds. Valid driver’s license and access to transportation.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in marine or coastal science or management, coastal geology, environmental sciences such as biology, management, policy, or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be accepted/considered based upon the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Experience using GIS software including GIS spatial and temporal analysis. Experience creating clear graphics for complex information and using social media for strategic communication needs. Experience with stakeholder engagement, broad public outreach, and human dimensions or social science techniques.

This is a full-time, visiting academic professional, grant supported, 12-month position subject to the continued availability of funding and programmatic need. Position may become a regular, non-visiting position at a later date depending on funding and programmatic need. The starting date is negotiable and the salary is commensurate with experience.

An Academic Hourly Assistant position is available to work directly with manufacturing, industrial and public sector entities throughout Illinois to provide technical assistance in identifying opportunities and implementing solutions to improve efficiency associated with materials, processes, water and wastewater, and energy utilization. This position will focus on providing waste minimization and diversion assistance to our clients.  Work 20 hours per week at $25 per hour.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Participate and contribute to on-site visits.
  • Assist in conducting research on planning and implementation of solid waste, recycling, compost, and other waste reduction and diversion programs.
  • Assist clients with facilitation and implementation of recommended opportunities.
  • Maintain up-to date knowledge of Illinois and US waste management and recycling regulations and policy.
  • Provide assistance in maintaining ongoing communication with clients and partners.
  • Assist with waste characterization and waste generation studies.
  • Assist with conducting primary data collection and analysis on current practices and opportunities in waste management.
  • Participate in pilot-scale projects for innovative processes in the area of industrial and municipal solid waste reuse, reduction, recycling, renewable energy and waste to energy methods.
  • Collect, process, and analyze data from technical assistance activities for the purposes of identifying suitable technologies for introduction to U of I departments and Illinois companies.
  • Present technical reports/papers/data to clients at professional events/conferences regarding ISTC services and/or research results.
  • Prepare and disseminate technical reports and publications to be published in professional journals, newsletters, peer-reviewed journals, etc.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, business, economics, or related discipline. A minimum of 3-4 years of applicable experience working in business or industrial environment. Educational internships or completion of a master’s degree in any of the above listed disciplines may be considered as professional experience. The Engineering & Construction Services Facilities Information Resources Unit at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a GIS Specialist to help lead the expansion of Facilities Information Resources geographic information systems products and services. Facilities Information Resources (FIR) maintains documentation and information systems related to campus infrastructure, and offers value-added custom services to enhance campus preparedness, awareness, knowledge and efficiency. The department is comprised of three units: GIS, Records, and Space Inventory.

Under the general supervision of the Facilities Information Management Coordinator this position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations and assisting with the development of GIS in Facilities and Services. The GIS Specialist is also responsible for production work involving maintenance of our GIS ArcSDE database, creation of GIS products and services and GPS data collection. In addition, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist will provide expertise, knowledge and a high degree of technical skill related to the field of geographic information science. The GIS Specialist will be responsible for developing strategies to help manage and maintain Facilities Information Resources GIS data, coordinate cross-unit initiatives to standardize access controls, implement standards and procedures for maintaining GIS data and collaborate closely with staff across multiple Facilities & Services units including University personnel.

Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with Energy Services, Utility Distribution Staff managing, documenting and maintaining the University’s utility distribution systems GIS data.
  • Assist with the development of client ESRI ArcGIS web applications and services.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of GIS applications built with ArcGIS extensions and ArcGIS Server.
  • Utilize ESRI's suite of ArcGIS software applications with relational databases including MS Access and SQL Server.
  • Manage and maintain Facilities Information Resource GIS ArcSDE Database.
  • Assist with coordinating cross-unit initiatives to standardize controls and access to GIS related resources.
  • Develop custom maps for Facilities Information Resource’s, F&S and campus customers.
  • Use Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to collect data.
  • Conduct fieldwork to verify facility management information.
  • Supervise student staff, prioritize work.
  • Train staff on use of GIS applications.
  • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.

Minimum Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required in Geographic Information Science (GIS), Computer Science, or other related field.

Minimum Required Work Experience:
0-2 years of experience working with Geographic Information Systems.

Additional Preferred Education and Work Experience:

Knowledge of auditing principles and practices and standards of the Institute of Internal Auditors, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the State Fiscal Control and Internal Auditing Act; ability to learn federal, state, and university laws, rules, and/or regulations related to internal audit procedures; demonstrated ability in written and verbal communications skills; analytical ability using large data sources and electronic data mining tools; ability to work independently or in a team environment and on own initiative; ability to schedule own audit projects and coordinate travel requirements to meet annual audit plan objectives; expertise that allows complex audit activities to be independently performed while receiving guidance from an off-site Audit Director; ability to work with all levels of University System Offices to achieve the appropriate focus on both departmental and enterprise-wide issues and achieve the defined goals and objectives of the assignment; ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments to produce accurate, detail-oriented work while meeting stringent deadlines; strong computer skills including the ability to effectively use software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Explorer; and excellent problem identification and solution skills to address difficult, complex issues.

Preferred qualifications include: Master's degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Business Administration, Nursing, or other pertinent field. Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Information Systems Auditor, Certified Public Accountant, Registered Nurse, or RHIA.

The University of Illinois seeks an Associate Vice President for Economic Development & Innovation to provide a very visible and dynamic leadership role for supporting economic development innovation activities that involve stakeholders throughout the University System and across Illinois, the nation, and the world.  This individual will provide an essential link between corporate, government, university, and community stakeholders and assist the Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation (VPEDI) in fulfilling the University’s missions regarding research and its translation into products and services that stimulate the economic growth – particularly in the state of Illinois.   Additional responsibilities include:
1. Provide leadership in creating public - private partnerships and enhance connections among internal and external university stakeholders to foster innovation and technology commercialization.

2. Lead efforts to establish and maintain relationships with corporate, government, university, and community partners to promote the University’s economic development mission.

3. Lead regional economic development opportunities to facilitate statewide engagement and drive efforts to promote economic growth throughout Illinois, the nation, and worldwide.

4. Direct efforts to strengthen the University’s innovation pipeline and economic development activities with a particular focus on the University of Illinois at Chicago. 

5. Work with university and external stakeholders to advance initiatives led by University System President and/or VP for Economic Development and Innovation.  

6. Partner with VPEDI and other stakeholders to develop and implement the University System’s strategic plan for economic development and innovation.

7 Conduct research and development activities under the direction and guidance of Argonne under its Prime Contract.

8. Other duties appropriate for an Associate Vice President.
Candidate must possess a Master’s or doctoral degree in science, engineering, or other research-related field with five to ten years of experience in related field.  Other requirements include: current University of Illinois employee; demonstrated leadership in commercializing intellectual property and execution of large technology-based initiatives; senior management experience, either in academic, government, or private sector, is desirable; demonstrated strong communication skills and the ability to provide leadership in the development and implementation of policy and management directives; excellent problem solving skills to address difficult, complex issues; strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach to develop and maintain effective work relationships.  Preferred qualifications include: Professional degree such as MBA, JD, or MPP
