Position Announcement – Congregational Organizer, Civic Action Network



Community Renewal Society (CRS) is a progressive, faith-based organization that works to eliminate race and class barriers through investigative journalism, training, and organizing. The Civic Action Network, CRS’s organizing and training arm, is a growing network of diverse congregations working to fight for racial and economic justice through powerful, direct action campaigns.



This is a full time position that organizes current and new Community Renewal Society member congregations to create social change on issues of race and poverty. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with passion for social justice and experience in organizing and working with faith communities.



Key Responsibilities:



Organizing

 Organize new and existing member congregations in the North side and North suburbs of Chicago Lake County of Chicago.

 Identify, train, and develop leaders in new and existing member congregations

 Build core Faith in Action teams in each member congregation

 Build a South side senior citizens organizing table to take action on issues affecting older adults on the South side.

 Work with leaders in member congregations to identify social justice issues affecting their communities for action.

 Work with leaders in member congregations to develop campaign strategies and execute actions for justice campaigns.

 Work to ensure high turn out for leaders for actions on all campaigns addressed by the network.

 Represent Community Renewal Society in various coalitions and work groups

Training

 Serve as a trainer for Community Renewal Society’s 3-Day Organizing Training and Congregational Justice Training.

 Recruit leaders and other community residents to trainings

General

 Maintain organizational records

 Manage online communication and advocacy tools.

 Attend and staff various CRS events.



Qualifications:

• A passion for social justice and for working with faith based institutions

• Motivation and drive

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred

• 2 years of organizing experience

• Experience working with clergy and congregations

• Spanish speaking a strong plus

• Valid IL drivers license and regular access to a vehicle (frequent local/in-state travel required)

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Ability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends
