Organizational Description
The National Association for Olmsted Parks (NAOP) is a non-profit membership organization
established in 1980 to protect and enhance the many parks, park systems and landscapes
designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, his sons and successor firm.
The organization, a coalition of design and preservation professionals, public and private park
administrators, scholars, citizen activists, and representatives of numerous local Olmsted
organizations, supports advocacy efforts, education, information exchange, and research,
including the Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted Project, a published Master List of Design
Projects of the Olmsted Firm, 1857-1979, and the Olmsted Research Guide Online (ORGO), an
online database of plans and data on Olmsted designs.

Project Proposal
Establish a bibliographic database of academic, professional, and published books, articles,
reports, university theses, dissertations, and papers on Olmsted-related topics.

Skills
The project will involve library research and communication with universities, professional
organizations and scholars, internet research, and database management. MLS, Information
Management or similar degree, or current graduate student with relevant experience preferred.

Learning Opportunities
To learn some of the social, design, educational, and political aspects of a growing public
interest in park rehabilitation and community realization and the role of research in a national
advocacy organization.

Project Timeline
Approximately August-December 2011, based on weekly hours (min. of 20 hours per week for
interns); some flexibility.

Location
NAOP maintains offices in downtown Washington, DC, and Alexandria, VA. While office space is
available, project work can be undertaken outside the NAOP office.
