Summer Analyst
Reports to: Director of Research and Strategy Classification: Contract position for 12 weeks
Summary
The Summer Analyst will work with CWIC’s Programs and Policy team to identify opportunities to improve economic opportunities for Chicagoans and meet the skill needs of Chicago employers; and to design strategies to capture those opportunities. In summer 2011, the Analyst’s primary project will be a research partnership between CWIC and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to conduct in-depth assessments of the workforce and economic aspects of specific industry clusters. Currently, the focus is on the freight cluster. This summer position is envisioned as an opportunity for somebody with a strong academic background and professional experience who desires an analytical role at the center of Chicago’s workforce development community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Interviewing officials from companies to understand the career paths available in different industries related to freight transportation, as well as any skill shortages companies are facing, and how those shortages might best be addressed;
Conducting quantitative and qualitative research into employment, economic, and education and training issues in freight-related industries in Chicago;
Preparing presentations, memos, etc., to communicate research findings, analysis, and recommendations, and to build partner support for agreed upon strategies;
Representing CWIC at various meetings; and
Supporting other CWIC Programs and Policy projects as necessary, usually in a research and analysis capacity.
Qualifications
Suitable candidates for this position will have roughly the following background:
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with outstanding academic performance. Preferred candidates will be working toward or have recently completed an MPP, MPA, MBA, or other relevant professional degree;
At least two (2) years of professional experience, preferably in consulting, project management, government management, non-profit management, public administration, public policy, social services, or transportation; and
Experience with large research projects, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and preparing and delivering presentations.
Related, attractive candidates will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Quick learning capacity;
The ability to draw insightful conclusions from large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data—and the ability to manage large datasets using MS Excel;
The ability to produce concise and effective communications in prose (Microsoft Word), presentation (Microsoft PowerPoint), or database (Microsoft Excel) format;
Excellent verbal communication skills;
Effective relationship-building skills; and
Strong time-management and multiple-priority management skills.
Familiarity with Chicago is preferred.
Computer Skills
High proficiency in MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook required.
Duration and Terms
12 week engagement, beginning June 2011 (exact start date is flexible)
Compensation: $7,200 for the duration ($1,200 every two weeks for 12 weeks)
Possibility of paid extension
No benefits
