*Starting salary is dependent upon qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for the range.
NATURE OF WORK:
The position of Economic Development Intern is responsible for performing entry-level
professional assignments to provide staff support to the City of Evanston’s Economic
Development Division.
The position provides a great opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student to
learn various aspects and phases of economic development projects which includes
providing support in project and field research, supporting staff at various business
meetings, performing demanding clerical duties and providing overall office support
coordination. The position provides excellent customer service to internal and external
customers on a daily basis. The nature of work is characterized by performance of
advanced technical and administrative duties for which skill in comprehensive
integration and coordination of several dissimilar administrative functions is required.
Work is often project oriented involving full scope of activities and accountability from
planning, initiation, execution and coordination to implementation and evaluation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the
following):
Economic Development focus:
• Assist in research for economic development projects and initiatives;
• Provide support in field research of vacant commercial properties throughout
Evanston;
• Provide data gathering assistance using internal software and public databases;
• Assist in the planning, coordination and hosting of Economic Development
events and initiatives;

• Perform general office work which includes but not limited to greeting guests,
directing customers to appropriate location or person, answering phones, making
copies, filing documents, taking notes at meetings, transcribing minutes etc.;
• Provide support to Economic Development staff at meetings (business districts
meetings, internal meetings, meetings with prospective businesses etc.); and
• Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
• Recent graduate (within 12 months) or enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s
Degree Program in Community/Urban Planning or similar degree;
• Must be able to work a minimum of four (4) days out of the work week;
• The following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Satisfactory verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to provide excellent customer service;
Knowledge of business terminology, spelling and punctuation;
Strong interpersonal and conceptual skills and the ability to deal effectively in
a team environment;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse
group of individuals including supervisors, co-workers, and the public;
Skilled in performing basic mathematical calculations;
Proficient in use of personal computers and related software applications
specifically; Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Outlook;
Ability to multi-task many variable duties and responsibilities;
Skilled in handling frequent interruptions and exercise critical judgment;
Ability to maintain professionalism in various situations; and
Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, ordinances, written policies
and procedures, statutes, rules, regulations, memos, letters, reports, and
legal documents.

SUPERVISION:
Work is performed under general supervision of Economic Development Coordinators.
The position has regular contact with other divisions and department at all levels, and
uses the necessary resources in other departments and divisions as well as external
resources as appropriate.
PUBLIC CONTACT:
The employee has regular and frequent contact with other City employees (within the
department and across department lines), elected officials and general public.
