Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting.
The Department of Human Resources is seeking applications for an Associate Vice President.
THE OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES
The Office of Human Resources manages all human resources functions, including: position management, recruitment and hiring, wage and salary administration, benefits administration, training and development, performance management systems, employee relations, policy development and interpretation, labor relations. With more than 1055 full-time and 1700 part-time employees, the department provides leadership and direction in developing institutional personnel policies and practices.
THE POSITION
Reporting to the Vice President Business Affairs and CFO, the Associate Vice President will oversee an operating and benefits budget of approximately $5 million and a staff of eight.
The Associate Vice President will provide and act as the primary spokesperson and representative of the human resources mission and vision, provide strategic direction and oversight of all human resources functions, and ensure leadership and credibility throughout the organization.
The position will develop and maintain effective infrastructure in support of a commitment to superior communication between management, faculty, employees, and staff to ensure that all human resources operations are of the highest quality, are administered effectively and are positively impacting the College.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provide vision and strategy for the human resources department, aligned with the College's strategic plan. Participate in the development of the College's plans and programs as a strategic partner representing employee's perspective. Translate and incorporate the College's strategic and tactical business plans into HR strategic and operational plans.
Implement or enhance systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the Office of Human Resources, including the human resource information systems and reporting. Manage the department budget as well as the benefits budget for the College.
Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning of new programs/strategies and regulatory action on the attraction, motivation, development, and retention of the staffing resources of the College.
Research, analyze, and administer the comprehensive benefits program, ensuring that it provides the adequate coverage within budget. Negotiate contracts and cost with insurance brokers, carriers, and third party administrators. Counsel faculty and staff on retirement, social security and tax deferred savings benefits, and serve as pension plan administrator for the College's retirement plan.
Develop or enhance policies and programs for effective management of employees, such as employee relations, affirmative action, sexual harassment, employee complaints, and external education and career development. Conduct investigations of discrimination and harassment claims. Create content and participate in training sessions on workplace issues.
Develop and implement strategies and procedures for recruitment and retention at all levels of the organization. Ensure that the College applies best recruitment and hiring practices. Further develop, coordinate, and conduct training and development programs for staff and faculty.
Develop human resource planning models to identify competency, knowledge and talent gaps. Areas of activity will include talent management through proper succession planning programs for key contributors and Management.
In conjunction with the Vice President Business Affairs, manage the compensation system which includes annual review of merit, market adjustments, and salary structures. Counsel administrators and department heads regarding reorganization and restructuring, including promotions and transfers.
Participate in labor contract negotiations and assist personnel with the administration and interpretation of the provisions of these contracts.
Perform other related duties based on department needs.

Seasoned professional with a successful track record in all functional areas of human resources management and the aptitude to provide visionary and strategic human resources leadership, aligned with the achievement of institutional goals and objectives.
Energetic, forward-thinking, and creative individual with high ethical standards who can build morale and empower employees. Intelligent and articulate individual who can relate to people at all levels of the organization and possesses excellent interpersonal skills.
Strategic planner with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus possessing fiscal integrity and familiar with the dynamics of financial accounting for human resources operations in institutions of higher education.
A visionary capable to negotiate, create consensus, develop effective relationships with key constituencies and influence superiors, peers and subordinates to work collaboratively resulting, in a dynamic and supportive work environment.
Minimum Education & Experience
Exceptional track record at employee relations and organizational development.
Experience working with labor unions.
A bachelor's degree with more than ten years of progressing leadership experience managing a human resources operation within higher education or a large complex setting or an equivalent combination of education, certification/license and experience is required.
A graduate degree in organizational development, human resources management or business administration is preferred.
Certification from the Society of Human Resource Management is desired.
This is a non-union position.
