Summary:

Passionate about making a difference in the lives of refugee and immigrant youth? Join our team as a Youth Coordinator at Refugee and Immigrant Community Services! This position works with refugee families with children 0-5 years old assisting them with accessing early education resources such as, but not limited to, childcare and pre-school. As a key position in our Youth and Family Services team, you'll facilitate outreach, coordinate activities, build partnerships, and advocate for the youth population.

Essential Functions: 

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Provides youth programming, including, but not limited to direct youth programs and out of school time activities, summer activities, K-12 case management, youth and young adult mentoring, early childhood and family literacy, college awareness and all other refugee and immigrant youth programs.
  • Facilitates outreach and assessments and referrals for the Youth population.
  • Serves as the lead per service area for all funder and program initiatives for youth.
  • Facilitates and Coordinates programs for Youth ages 5-18 years of age.
  • Serves as the lead per service area for the Refugee Youth Summer and Junior Counselor program.
  • Conducts monthly programs/ activities that highlight targeted youth programs.
  • Builds linkage agreements between Heartland Human Care Services (HHCS) and youth providers in the city of Chicago.
  • Promotes program activities and services to meet the needs and the expectations of the youth population.
  • Serves as an advocate for HHCS youth population.
  • Facilitates and coordinates workshops with the youth population, including, but not limited to, the areas of employment, education, etc.
  • Facilitates and coordinates special events for youth.
  • Provides external linkages that support all youth initiatives and outcomes (e.g. park district, day care providers, etc.).
  • Develops strong partnerships with local elementary and high schools to promote after-school programming and sport activities.
  • Coordinates with other programs to ensure quality services for refugee and immigrant youth.
  • Tracks service and outcome data and completes case notes in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of seven years’ experience in case work, human services or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Bachelors degree may be required if mandated by the funder and/or regulatory agency.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A): 

  • Fluency in a second language may be required. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office.  Proficiency in Microsoft Access may be required. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Demonstrate the ability to speak before large groups and have a strong presentation.  
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 

 

Work Arrangement:  

This role is eligible for a “hybrid” work arrangement. It is expected this person would be able to meet for “in person” meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.

Director of Programs - Center for Urban Pedagogy (Brooklyn, NY)

Who: The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP). CUP is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of design and art to increase meaningful civic engagement, particularly among historically under-represented communities. CUP’s work addresses the needs of communities struggling to make sense of the complex public policies and decision-making processes that impact their lives, from affordable housing to labor rights. What: CUP is seeking a creative and energetic individual with experience in design and policy who wants to use design and art to contribute to meaningful social change. The Director of Programs will work on and oversee the core Community Education and Youth Education programs. Senior Associate for Opportunity Youth Strategies, Thrive Chicago

Who: Thrive Chicago serves as the local backbone in Chicago of the national 100,000 Opportunities Initiative (www.100Kopportunities.org). The 100K initiative aims to be the largest employer-led coalition in the country focused on Opportunity Youth and is currently active in eight cities.

What: As an integral member of Thrive’s dynamic and growing team, the Senior Associate for Opportunity Youth Strategies will work with key partners to support Thrive’s OY strategies aimed at reducing the number of Chicago youth not in school or working. The Senior Associate will work closely with the Thrive Director of Opportunity Youth Strategies to drive forward the work in this portfolio, including: Reconnection Hubs, Learn & Earn, Pathways to Careers, and 100K Opportunities. This position will serve as the primary point of contact and project manager for the wide range of stakeholders engaged in these workstreams. Stakeholders include: public institutions, community based organizations, funders, and employers. This skilled project manager will be flexible in supporting the needs of Thrive’s OY workstreams, ensuring the timely and effective completion of deliverables associated with them. This position will also serve as the primary coordinator of Thrive’s 100K initiative activities and liaison to 100K employers in Chicago. Job description

The mission of Urban Alliance is to empower under-resourced youth to aspire, work and succeed through paid-internships, formal training, and mentoring. As the primary city-wide internship program in Washington, DC, we accomplish our mission by providing high school students with long-term, paid internships in professional settings where each student's supervisor also serves as his/her mentor. Additionally, we provide job readiness, life-skills, and financial literacy workshops, as well as assistance with college and vocational planning. Over the last 17 years, Urban Alliance has served over 15,000 youth through our High School Internship Program and workshops in the community. Over the last five years, UA youth maintained a 100% high school graduation rate, and facilitated over 90% of program alumni being accepted into college and over 80% enrolling in college. The program has had dynamic growth in the last five years, expanding to serve youth city-wide and in Northern Virginia and opening offices in Baltimore and Chicago.

The Program Coordinator supports the students' mentors and the student interns in their professional development as well as assists them with their post-high school planning. This position reports to the Program Director. We are seeking a candidate who is planning to dedicate a minimum of 2 years to this position.

Job Responsibilities
  • Monitor the professional, academic and personal performance of high school interns
  • Build and maintain relationships with students, mentors, parents, and school staff
  • Actively recruit participants, including visits and presentations to target schools
  • Manage relationships with corporate leaders by supporting mentors with suggestions to best structure intern supervision
  • Conduct formal evaluations of intern job performance and skill development
  • Troubleshoot and mediate jobsite conflicts
  • Facilitate weekly professional development workshops for high school interns
  • Counsel interns on post-high school options, college application process, and develop individual plans for all interns
  • Demonstrate flexibility with the understanding that working with youth requires going above and beyond
  • Work with Executive Director and Director of Evaluation to share data and respond promptly to data requests
  • Represent the organization at events as needed
Qualifications
  • At minimum a Bachelor's Degree
  • At least two year experience working in youth development/ with youth is REQUIRED
  • Curriculum development and teaching experience
  • Is passionate about our mission and the possibilities of what youth can accomplish
  • Experience working with community organizations and schools in under-resourced areas
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including mediation skills and the ability to have direct and open conversations
  • Can work successfully independently and in a team
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint
