Youth Development Specialist, Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana - Chicago, IL

 The Role - Youth Development Specialist

The Youth Development Specialist will oversee and lead troop sessions with girls in grades K-12 during virtual, day, and after school programming. The Youth Development Specialist will visit program sites in Chicago.

This is an hourly, full-time role that is benefits and overtime eligible. Travel for this role is required.

Required Hours

  • Monday through Friday (30-37.5 hours per week)
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnights

What you will be doing:

  • Provide a safe and fun environment for programming at all times
  • Deliver programing ​in relation to STEAM, Financial Literacy, and Life Skills in an engaging, consistent, and structured manner
  • Use trauma lens and SEL tools to assess girls’ behavior and program environment effectively and appropriately to support girls' emotional needs
  • Work collaboratively with program volunteers while maintaining primary responsibility for program effectiveness
  • Attend community events, trainings, and meetings
  • Maintains records for each site (attendance, troop and girl information via Dashboard), and following Girl Scouts procedures
  • Cultivate community collaborations in identified areas and build relationships with school/park personnel in support of/ in conjunction with their manager
  • Adheres to the policies and procedures and models behaviors consistent with the expectations of GSGCNWI 
  • Support team effort to ensure achievement of GSGCNWI membership goals
  • Ability to work a flexible time schedule including occasional nights and weekends
  • Complete short pieces of writing describing the effect of the program on participants
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

What you will bring along:

  • Bilingual in Spanish, preferred
  • High School diploma or equivalent degree required; experience in education, psychology, youth development, or program delivery preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Minimum 1-3 years’ experience and a demonstrated track record in program facilitation for young people, operational procedures, and program’s compliance with grant requirements
  • 1-3 years of youth development experience in out-of-school or classroom settings
  • Highly organized and demonstrated hands on experience with proven ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Compensation: $24.36/hr

Program Manager, The Gray Matter Experience

Who: The Gray Matter Experience

What: The Gray Matter Experience is seeking a passionate and experienced educator to

join our team as the Program Manager. This person will be responsible for

developing and managing entrepreneurship programming with an emphasis on high

school students. They will also play a critical role in ensuring that TGME’s

programming addresses the academic, social, and emotional needs of youth

through an array of educational and enrichment activities. The ideal candidate will

have strong experience in education, non-profit management, and community

building and also have a strong understanding of entrepreneurial processes and

practices. We see this position as an integral part of our mission to uplift students

from under-resourced communities and help close the education, knowledge and

resource gap. 

Responsibilities:

·         Plan the delivery of the overall program and its activities in accordance

with the mission and goals of TGME, including designing and facilitating

curriculum and student-centered experiences for high school

programming

·         Develop new and enhance current initiatives to support the strategic

direction of the organization

·         Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives to achieve the

successful outcome of the program

·         Develop an annual program budget and operating plan to support

programming

·         Along with Program Coordinator, lead program facilitation and staff

programmatic events

·         Organize all students and alumni events, including program

culminating events and alumni engagement activities

·         Supervise program staff by providing direction, input and feedback,

and holding weekly team check-ins to ensure smooth running of the

programs

Program Management, Logistics & Evaluation

·         Manage student and volunteer recruitment, outreach and engagement

including regular communication, scheduling and engagement

initiatives - ensuring alignment with program enrollment goals and

criteria

·         Maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance records and other

administrative documents, metrics and reporting related to grant

compliance

·         Occasional email communication with potential volunteers and

partners as well as student check-ins to ensure students are

completing assignments as necessary

·         Maintain and carry out evaluation methods to assess program

strengths and identify areas for improvement

·         Monitor the program activities on a regular basis to observe, support

and evaluate instruction and implementation

Community & Partner Outreach

·         Communicate with members and other stakeholders to gain

community support for the program and to solicit input to improve the

program

·         Represent the organization at conferences and other public events;

leading activities, speaking roles and trainings

·         Serve as a critical partner in stakeholder engagement, including

organizing, holding and supporting events and communicating with

families and community members.

·         Cultivate existing relationships with vendors, community groups,

companies and schools with the goal of ensuring sufficient resources

and access to services

·         Fulfill all other duties as assigned by the Founder & CEO


Qualifications:

·         Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to cultivate and

maintain stakeholder relationships (e.g. community partners, families,

school admin, and donors)

·         Have a strong understanding of entrepreneurship

·         Ability to work both in a team environment and independently with

minimal supervision, be flexible, and manage multiple priorities

·         Ability to work well in a fast-paced startup environment

·         Organizational, communication and problem-solving skills - must be

organized and able to manage a variety of tasks

·         Minimum of 2 years experience working and building positive relationships

with high school aged youth and/or equal experience developing and

managing impactful programs in an educational setting, youth development

agency, or out-of-school time program

·         Experience developing and implementing youth programming that considers

the impact of race, gender, socio-economic status, and other identities on

academic and educational experiences for youth

·         Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (i.e., Sociology, Education, Social Work)

·         Experience with data collection and using technology as a management

reporting tool

·         Experience cultivating and maintaining stakeholder relationships (e.g.

community partners, families, school admin, and donors).

·         Proven experience managing a team

·         Competency with technology applications including Microsoft applications,

project management software and digital communication tools

·         Strong project management skills

·         A self-reflective and positive disposition

Job description

The mission of Urban Alliance is to empower under-resourced youth to aspire, work and succeed through paid-internships, formal training, and mentoring. As the primary city-wide internship program in Washington, DC, we accomplish our mission by providing high school students with long-term, paid internships in professional settings where each student's supervisor also serves as his/her mentor. Additionally, we provide job readiness, life-skills, and financial literacy workshops, as well as assistance with college and vocational planning. Over the last 17 years, Urban Alliance has served over 15,000 youth through our High School Internship Program and workshops in the community. Over the last five years, UA youth maintained a 100% high school graduation rate, and facilitated over 90% of program alumni being accepted into college and over 80% enrolling in college. The program has had dynamic growth in the last five years, expanding to serve youth city-wide and in Northern Virginia and opening offices in Baltimore and Chicago.

The Program Coordinator supports the students' mentors and the student interns in their professional development as well as assists them with their post-high school planning. This position reports to the Program Director. We are seeking a candidate who is planning to dedicate a minimum of 2 years to this position.

Job Responsibilities
  • Monitor the professional, academic and personal performance of high school interns
  • Build and maintain relationships with students, mentors, parents, and school staff
  • Actively recruit participants, including visits and presentations to target schools
  • Manage relationships with corporate leaders by supporting mentors with suggestions to best structure intern supervision
  • Conduct formal evaluations of intern job performance and skill development
  • Troubleshoot and mediate jobsite conflicts
  • Facilitate weekly professional development workshops for high school interns
  • Counsel interns on post-high school options, college application process, and develop individual plans for all interns
  • Demonstrate flexibility with the understanding that working with youth requires going above and beyond
  • Work with Executive Director and Director of Evaluation to share data and respond promptly to data requests
  • Represent the organization at events as needed
Qualifications
  • At minimum a Bachelor's Degree
  • At least two year experience working in youth development/ with youth is REQUIRED
  • Curriculum development and teaching experience
  • Is passionate about our mission and the possibilities of what youth can accomplish
  • Experience working with community organizations and schools in under-resourced areas
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including mediation skills and the ability to have direct and open conversations
  • Can work successfully independently and in a team
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint
