Youth Program Coordinator, Project: VISION, Inc. - Chicago, IL

Position: Youth Program Coordinator (Middle School)

Reports to: Youth Program Manager

Status:

Exempt, 40 hours/week

Starting salary range: $44,600-48,000

Benefits eligible (medical, dental, paid time off)

Project: VISION is a nonprofit organization with a mission to help youth of Chicago’s Greater Chinatown community achieve their full potential by providing them with tools for educational, personal, and civic development. PV serves over 400 middle and high school youth each year out of its two Chinatown youth centers as well as three local school-based sites. We are seeking a mission-driven, creative, and energetic individual to join our team and serve as a Youth Program Coordinator within our Middle School Program.

The ideal candidate is committed to our mission and has experience and passion for working with young people. They are also driven by a growth mindset and thrive in a fast-paced, impact-based work environment.

The Coordinator’s role will focus on building and delivering enrichment programs that develop youths’ social emotional learning and life skills through the arts, cultural, sports and recreation, STEM, and community service activities. The primary responsibilities of the Youth Program Coordinator will include the following:

1.       Collaborate with the Program Manager to create curricula for out-of-school time enrichment programs (Saturdays, school breaks, summers) that help youth strengthen social emotional learning, practice life skills, and explore diverse interests

2.       Develop high quality, creative lesson plans and activities that meet program goals and objectives

3.       Be able to manage a classroom and deliver planned programming in a way that engages both large and small groups of youth effectively

4.       Create a learning environment that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all youth

5.       Coordinate the logistics of activities such as preparing materials and supplies, scheduling field trips, and involving guest speakers and instructors

6.       Train and supervise Program Leaders (PLs) and Mentors, who support program delivery and classroom management; PLs can support the Coordinator in lesson planning, activity preparation and coordination, facilitation of activities, and classroom management

7.       Train PLs and Mentors in basic mentoring principles and skills, while also serving as a program mentor to youth participants

8.       Support program evaluation by collecting and inputting data into designated tools or platforms and assisting with data analysis to contribute to continuous program improvement and funder reporting requirements

Other responsibilities include:

      Work with the Parent Engagement Coordinator to engage parents with regular communications and other supports

      Work with the Case Manager to identify youth who may need additional external services (e.g. supporting mental health, basic needs, etc.) and help coordinate access to resources as needed

      Assist with youth recruitment activities, including outreach to the community and local schools

      Work with community partners to carry out collaborative programs

      Attend and actively participate in team meetings

      Attend trainings regularly to stay abreast of best practices in youth development as well as to meet funder requirements

Qualifications:

      Bachelor's degree required

      Minimum of 3 years of experience working with grades 6-8 youth (ages 11-14) required, preferably in an afterschool space

      Experience with curriculum development and lesson planning highly preferred

      Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and Google applications

      Minimum of conversational spoken Chinese Cantonese and/or Mandarin highly preferred Other qualifications for consideration will be:

o   Demonstrated strong interest in a nonprofit career in youth development o Values alignment with the organization, including commitment to its mission and goals and the issues of AAPI and immigrant youth and families and the local Chinatown community

o   Ability to problem solve, offering ideas and suggestions while working with team members to overcome challenges

o   Self-driven work ethic and resilience as demonstrated by exhibiting ownership of projects, taking initiative, and able to adapt to shifting priorities and needs of the organization

o   Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and capacity to manage multiple projects and occasional high volume of work with efficiency and without sacrificing quality

o   Positive attitude with ability to problem solve in the face of challenges and turn negative outcomes into learning opportunities

o   Comfortability with working independently but also able to work in a team environment and willing to ask for help when needed

o   Strong verbal and written communication skills o Experience managing others, including providing training, supervision, and feedback to team members

This position’s working hours will most likely be Tuesdays to Fridays 11a-7p and Saturdays 9a-5p.

Youth Transition Coordinator, Access Living - Chicago, IL

Basic Job Function

The Youth Transition Coordinator works within the Disability Innovation Fund-Pathways demonstration project and provides services to youth with disabilities. The Coordinator is responsible for assisting youth with disabilities in preparing for transition out of high school. The coordinator educates youth on Independent Living skills, disability awareness, preparing for and placement in employment, and exploring continuing education options. The Coordinator assists in connecting youth to wrap around services.

Specific Duties

Work with students with disabilities in Chicago Schools to:

  • Enroll consumers into the Pathways to Partnership program with Access Living by completing all necessary intake paperwork.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with work sites, Office of Diverse Learners (ODLSS), Chicago Public Schools and staff, Division of Rehab Services, other Centers for Independent Living (CILs) that are involved in the project, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), UIC, and other entities throughout Chicagoland area.
  • Maintain relationships with college admissions and disability service offices in the Chicagoland area
  • Facilitate the program curriculum that focuses on educating youth about Independent Living skills, disability history and awareness, self-advocacy, and job readiness skills.
  • Assist in modifying lessons as needed
  • Complete pre and post-test for each lesson
  • Provide wrap-around services by consulting with and assisting youth regarding issues they will need to manage to be successful upon transition (e.g. accommodation needs, medication management, etc.)
  • Assist in leading informational sessions for parents, as neededParticipate in annual college and transition fairs for people with disabilitiesTrack program results and report on program progress

Job coaching and job placement:

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with employers
  • Assist and aid consumers in job searching, resume and cover letter development, applying for employment, preparing for interviews, guidance on follow-up, and employment retention upon receiving a job.
  • Assess the professional strengths and weaknesses of employeesAssist employees with disabilities in learning and excelling in their job functions.

Post-Secondary Education:

  • Assist youth in exploring and applying for post-secondary education and financial support.
  • Connect youth to the disability resource center.
  • Provide youth with wrap-around services; as needed.
  • When needed: assist in performing travel training with students when utilizing public transportation.
  • Maintain database system(s) for each consumer enrolled.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Complete reports as needed.

Education and Training

College degree preferred.

Experience

  • Employee must have basic knowledge of disability rights laws and experience in the field of independent living, disability rights and self-determination movements. 
  • Experience facilitating lessons or presentations to groups.
  • Experience with job placement and job coaching preferred.
  • Good presentation, organization, and written and inter-personal/communication skills needed. 

Physical Demands

Must be able to travel within Cook County.

Computer, telephone, fax, copier and printer.

Working Environment     

Office area is a shared workspace divided by cubicles. Access Living staff operates on a hybrid work model; two days per week in the office.

Essential Functions: 

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Provides youth programming, including, but not limited to direct youth programs and out of school time activities, summer activities, K-12 case management, youth and young adult mentoring, early childhood and family literacy, college awareness and all other refugee and immigrant youth programs.
  • Facilitates outreach and assessments and referrals for the Youth population.
  • Serves as the lead per service area for all funder and program initiatives for youth.
  • Facilitates and Coordinates programs for Youth ages 5-18 years of age.
  • Serves as the lead per service area for the Refugee Youth Summer and Junior Counselor program.
  • Conducts monthly programs/ activities that highlight targeted youth programs.
  • Builds linkage agreements between Heartland Human Care Services (HHCS) and youth providers in the city of Chicago.
  • Promotes program activities and services to meet the needs and the expectations of the youth population.
  • Serves as an advocate for HHCS youth population.
  • Facilitates and coordinates workshops with the youth population, including, but not limited to, the areas of employment, education, etc.
  • Facilitates and coordinates special events for youth.
  • Provides external linkages that support all youth initiatives and outcomes (e.g. park district, day care providers, etc.).
  • Develops strong partnerships with local elementary and high schools to promote after-school programming and sport activities.
  • Coordinates with other programs to ensure quality services for refugee and immigrant youth.
  • Tracks service and outcome data and completes case notes in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of seven years’ experience in case work, human services or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Bachelors degree may be required if mandated by the funder and/or regulatory agency.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A): 

  • Fluency in a second language may be required. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office.  Proficiency in Microsoft Access may be required. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Demonstrate the ability to speak before large groups and have a strong presentation.

Work Arrangement:  

This role is eligible for a “hybrid” work arrangement. It is expected this person would be able to meet for “in person” meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.
