Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates seeks a highly organized, independent, and strong manager to lead our GIS department. The GIS Manager may be based in our New York, Boston, or Washington, DC office. Nelson\Nygaard is a nationally recognized multimodal transportation planning firm that emphasizes creative and innovative planning and community involvement, often within a wider set of goals such as economic development, health, and reduced dependence on the private automobile. We are seeking an individual with at least 7 years of experience and an interest in transportation planning as well as exemplary GIS analysis and cartography skills.

Responsibilities

In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to manage a team of GIS analysts and to provide guidance to planning staff members who do basic spatial analysis. The GIS Manager will:
  • Manage GIS staff, including GIS leads in each of the offices
  • Maintain quality control through supervision of GIS leads and in collaboration with the Assistant GIS Manager (West Coast lead)
  • Manage the workflow on the East Coast
  • Manage GIS procedures and software access across the firm
  • Develop in-house GIS tools and resources and supervise all GIS users
  • Provide training to GIS staff and develop training materials
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting to GIS users in all offices
  • Oversee GIS file management and archiving for the firm
  • Act as point person for internal mapping needs (marketing, website, special projects)
The GIS Manager will also spend approximately one-third of his or her time completing spatial analyses related to demographics, transit routes and facilities, parking studies, and ped/bike projects. The manager may be expected to:
  • Generate maps and cartographic products for projects using ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, Google Earth Pro, and other software tools as necessary
  • Perform spatial and network analysis tasks and act as a technical specialist on projects
  • Assist in online GIS/web maps for public engagement

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate should hold at minimum a bachelor’s degree in Geography or Urban Planning or a Graduate Certification in GIS. The candidate must have a minimum of 7 years of experience as a GIS analyst and at least 2 years of experience as a manager or supervisor of a team. The candidate must have strong proficiency with ArcGIS 10.2 or above, Google Earth and Adobe Illustrator. Familiarity with SketchUp, VectorWorks or CAD, Adobe Photoshop/InDesign, Python scripts, C#/VB.NET programming or web development is a plus. Candidates will be tested on their proficiency with GIS tasks.
