Mission: Blackstone Bicycle Works (BBW) is a youth education program of the Experimental Station (ES). BBW is a full-service community bike shop dedicated to promoting positive ecological practices and empowering youth from Chicago’s South Side—teaching mechanical skills, job skills, and business literacy to youth ages 8-18.

Status: $14.50 per hour. Comes with benefits.
Work Hours: Full-Time position; Tuesday-Saturday (may vary and include evenings)
Immediate Supervisor: Program Manager, Blackstone Bicycle Works

Position Objective:
Under the direction of the Program Manager, the youth services coordinator and head instructor
coordinates the daily youth experience. This includes: coordinating and leading bike instruction;
acting as the head instructor for the program; engaging youth in all areas of the program and
business; maintaining the shop as a safe and supportive environment; informing and advancing short
and long term program goals; strongly representing and advocating for the organization and program.

Essential Functions:

● Provide coordination for the youth program.

○ Help to maintain a safe and positive learning environment at BBW.
○ Coordinate, schedule, and lead daily youth bike repair instruction; engage with all
areas of the program and business; further develop and refine curriculum and
instruction methods; work with other staff to develop instruction on customer service
and business operations.
○ Facilitate youths’ participation (intake, retention, parental communication) and their
engagement with all areas of the program and business.
○ Facilitate tracking of program data and other documentation (participation rosters,
youth work logs, skill sheets, apron system, activity summaries, photo/video documentation).
○ Coordinate auxiliary youth services (internship and externship programs, homework
and tutoring, college advising, field trips, races, career exploration, mentoring, snack and meal programs).
○ Schedule and coordinate all instructors (staff, volunteers, and youth). Engage and
develop team to support youth instruction.
○ Coordinate with staff to engage youth in customer services and business operations. Instruct youth on best practices for ensuring quality customer service and shop services.
○ Maintain program spaces, equipment and supplies used for youth education and
engagement. Engage youth in this maintenance.
○ Support and engage with Youth Leadership Team, the program's youth council.
○ Provide reports to monitor student participation, skill advancement, and overall
engagement in program.
○ Support and contribute to program initiatives to address needs and opportunities that
arise, especially those that involve engaging youth.
○ Communicate program needs related to acquiring supplies and equipment. Be an excellent steward of our resources.
○ Assist PM as needed with the management of BBW.

Qualifications:

● Education: High School graduate or equivalent. College degree preferred.

● Experience: Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated success teaching and developing curriculum
for youth programs. Experience leading youth or adult bike repair instruction. Program and staff/volunteer coordination experience preferred.

● Skills and Abilities: Highly organized. Moderate to advanced bike repair skills. Teaching and
curriculum development skills. Able to communicate and relate with a diversity of youth,
adults, staff, and groups; work as part of a team; work independently; take initiative and solve
problems; remain calm under pressure; repair and refurbish bicycles; organize and execute
plans; and effectively use email, google apps, and social media.

● Physical and Mental Demands: Must be physically and mentally able to perform essential
functions, possessing sufficient physical strength and energies to effectively engage in
activities with youth, and manage and maintain the program's supplies, equipment, and facilities.

Project Wave of Optimism (Project WOO) – a registered 501(c) 3 non­profit organization delivers collaborative programs to improve quality of life in rural Nicaraguan communities. For further information on our mission, vision and approach to community development, please visit: www.projectwoo.org.

Currently Project WOO is looking for an enthusiastic, responsible, independent yet team oriented person to work collaboratively with the local community of Playa Gigante and the WOO team in the organization, growth, oversight and management of the WOO Immersion Program

Position Title:WOO Immersion Program Coordinator
Supervisor:Executive Director
Dates of Position: Immediate (18 month minimum contract)
Compensation: Competitive (depending on experience)

WOO Immersion Program Coordinator Scope of Work:

S/he will lead in the planning, facilitation and coordination of all Project WOO Immersion groups. S/he will serve as the primary liaison between Project WOO groups and Project WOO program areas and community leadership. S/he will also be responsible for all pre­ and post­trip communication as well as searching for new groups that would like to participate in the Immersion Program.

Role and Responsibilities: Program Development

  • Create solid programming design for all incoming Immersion program groups facilitated by Project WOO
  • Cultivate and sustain relationships with partnering organizations that will result in long­term relationships with the community and that will continue to support/strengthen WOO's operational budget
  • Work with homestay program and create sustainable plan for families involved
  • Continue the development of WOO Internship Program, which includes, but is not limited to: the oversight, management, orientation and support of WOO Interns.
  • Develop innovative ideas and activities to ensure successful community/group exchange and integration.
  • Collaborate with WOO English Program and WOO Health Program to ensure participation of groups in WOO programming.
  • Support in the development of WOO surf programs
Immersion Group Facilitation
  • Lead and facilitate all Immersion groups
  • Promote and facilitate positive inter­cultural interaction and organize/oversee immersion activities
  • Translation for all groups
  • Perform introductory briefings about Project WOO and the community of Gigante, including history, current state of affairs, geography, key community leaders, and other orientation information to a variety of travelers and volunteers
  • Deliver introductions, briefing on home­stays, safety, expectations, etc...
  • Provide daily support at project work sites as needed
  • Ensure volunteer safety on both land and in water
Immersion Group Administration
  • Organize housing and food for all groups, coordination with homestays and organization with local hotels
  • Organize transportation (when needed) for groups
  • Prepare budgets for all groups
  • Reconciliation of expenses at end of each Immersion Trip
  • Ensure MINSA approval for medical brigades alongside Health Center and Health Program Manager
  • Ensure knowledge of group arrival to community committees, school, MINSA, MINED, police and other stakeholders
  • Ensure hiring of additional translators for medical brigades
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree essential; Master's or equivalent experience in public health, public policy, urban planning, education, social work, international development, or related field
  • Ability to read, write and speak confidently in both Spanish and English
  • Experience facilitating a variety of diverse volunteer groups of various age levels
  • International rural community development experience (community engagement, capacity building, project design, management, reporting)
  • Experience working with a diverse, cross­cultural team, including building professional relationships 
  • Wilderness First Aid, CPR and Life Guard Certification
  • Knowledge of surf culture and its growing impact on local communities
  • Experience with surfing and ability to surf, able to teach basic surf lessons and have strong knowledge of ocean water safety

Youth Program Coordinator/ Educator- Environmental Science, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance - Far Rockaway, NY

Youth Program Coordinator/ Educator- Environmental Science

Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA), a non-profit organization located in Far Rockaway, NY Queens, dedicated to fostering a deeper respect for the natural environment of the Rockaway Peninsula, by providing enriching arts, educational and recreational programs that support a diverse, healthy and environmental resilient coastal community.
In September 2015, RWA will be opening the RISE center headquartered in Far Rockaway, NY. For the right candidate this position has room for growth to expand environmental education programs for adults and children.
RWA seeks a talented and self-motivated individual to oversee RWA's Shore Corps & Environmentor after school internship programs for high school students focused on land and marine based environmental conservation.
The Environmental Coordinator/Educator will report directly to the Program Director and will be tasked with leading youth in on-the-ground environmental field work, data collection and analysis, quality assurance,and restoration reporting. Position requires oversight of youth, program curriculum, restoration work and collaboration with scientists, mentors and government agencies.
Coordinator/Educator will be required to teach students to identify shoreline habitat, remove invasive species of plants and learn GPS technology to map the area. Will also collaborate with ecologists to develop and implement a plan for dune restoration, coastal conservation and Urban Planning Projects led by youth in RWA after school programs.
Required Skills and Experience
  • A passion, experience and skill in working with youth in environmental science.
  • Expertise in implementing coastal conservation and restoration efforts, and public outreach.
  • At least 3 years of prior teaching experience in environmental science or biology.
  • Experience in youth development, environmental education and implementation of habitat restoration projects.
  • Computer, data analysis, and information management skills including the use of the MS Office suite, graphic design and Arc-GIS mapping software
  • College degree, preferably in ecology, science, or education
  • Demonstrates strong people skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player with a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and excellent social skills
  • Possesses sensitivity and experience working with ethnically diverse and underserved communities
  • Valid drivers' license
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Organize, manage and evaluate the Shore Corps, and Environmentor curriculum. • Maintain and expand the RWA network of participating students and local schools. • Participate in NYC and watershed professional organizations. • Design and implement assessment measures to demonstrate program impact on student conservation knowledge. • Track attendance, performance and behavior through record keeping. • Write a program narrative report at the conclusion of the program. • Provide crisis intervention services when necessary. • Serve as in-house photographer to document students participation during the program.
Commitment Programs begin September 2015 and run throughout the year. 18-25 hours per week, required at least 2 weekdays 12-6PM and 1 weekend day 9-2PM in Rockaway, Queens to lead community engagement event.

Executive Director, Mikva Challenge - Chicago, IL

Mikva Challenge’s board of directors has embarked upon a search for a
dynamic, inspiring, and talented leader to serve as the Chicago Executive
Director.  This is an exciting opportunity to grow Mikva’s Chicago area
footprint and amplify its status as a regional and national model, while
Mikva expands into other markets.  S/he must feel at ease engaging both
C-Suite and city school stakeholders to take part in Mikva’s mission.
This position was created as part of Mikva’s restructuring to accommodate
its strategic expansion blueprint.

S/he will report to the National Director and work on institutional
strategies that promote Mikva’s unique brand and model of programs that
include: the Center for Action Civics, Project Soapbox and Democracy in
Action, Youth Councils, Election Judges, and Campaign Internships.  As
part of Mikva Challenge’s leadership team, the Executive Director must be
a relationship builder, strategic thinker, active in organizing and
executing plans, and possess political savvy.

The Chicago Executive Director must have in-depth knowledge of and
experience working with youth-focused civic or education based
organizations.  The Executive Director must have a strong ethical
leadership style and s/he will act as Mikva’s “public face” by maintaining
and developing relationships with not for profit organizations, public
officials, corporations, schools, media, staff and donors including
networking, meetings, site visits, and public speaking.

S/he is responsible for the stewardship of the Chicago Office that
includes implementing strategic fundraising, programmatic, and operational
goals.

In addition, the Executive Director’s scope of responsibilities and roles
include:


•Collaborate with board and staff to grow and improve Mikva’s cutting edge
action civics programming
•Fundraise from multiple donor sources to support Mikva’s programming in
the Chicagoland area, particularly with Chicago area foundations and
corporations
•Responsible for program evaluation and program results
•Exhibit a strong business acumen to manage expenses and operations for
the Chicago office
•Cultivate current and prospective relationships with stakeholders,
including funders, public officials, government agencies, media, and other
NFP leaders
•Assist in leading efforts to develop annual program goals, budgets, and
communication plans
