Economic Development Planner - Great Cities Institute, UIC CUPPA (Chicago, IL)

Who: The Great Cities Institute (GCI) of College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Great Cities Institute produces research on topics such as urban fiscal policies, economic development, infrastructure and capital financing, and other urban planning and policies issues.

What: Full-time Economic Development Planner for research activities and programs. This position: Performs urban planning and research activities as well as technical studies to provide the necessary information for the formulation of community and economic development strategies, programs and services and for investment decisions; Provides assistance in the development of short and long term economic and community development plans, as well as the gathering of information and preparation of studies, reports, and recommendations to achieve such goals; Contributes to the educational objectives of the College by developing and delivering public and classroom presentations, supervising student projects and internships and preparing and presenting specialized reports. Overview

The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a regular full-time Senior Development Planner to join our team of professionals in the Community Development Division; Development Planning Department.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Development Planning you will join a multi-disciplinary team of professionals applying your breadth of planning and development related knowledge and experience. As an expert in your field, you have an extensive knowledge of best practices in planning, urban design and sustainability. You will be responsible for managing and processing highly complex and diverse land use applications, updating bylaws, policies and procedures. You will also have the opportunity for supervising a talented team of planning professionals, technical and support staff.
Requirements
Your qualifications include strong academic credentials with a post-graduate degree in Planning, plus seven years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Full membership or eligibility for full membership with the Planning Institute of British Columbia is required. You have excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills, are well organized, decisive and able to communicate effectively. You are a consensus builder, fully conversant with the challenges facing a growing community and have well-honed report writing skills.

The Village is accepting applications for a Development Planner to join the Community Development Department. Successful candidates demonstrate a passion for the work, a positive internal and external customer service attitude, adaptability and an ability to understand and balance competing priorities. The position would assist the Community Development Department in planning and implementing the Village's Comprehensive Plan and ordinances with regard to land use and development and provide technical expertise to staff and Village regulatory boards, including the Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and Architectural Design Review Board
Examples of Major Duties:
  • Evaluating development proposals and petitions as they relate to the Village's Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Ordinance
  • Conducting research and analysis to prepare recommendations and completing written reviews and reports on current development proposals and petitions
  • Presenting reports to the Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and Architectural Design Review Board
  • Case management including the coordination with various Village departments, external agencies, petitioners, and the public
  • Completing permit reviews to ensure zoning ordinance compliance.
The ideal Development Panner candidate will have a Master's Degree in urban planning or closely related field and two years of experience in a municipal planning department handling current development projects in a community with infill-type development.  Professional certification (AICP) is preferred at time of hire, but should be achieved within 2 years.
