Director of Faculty Research Activities, UIC

Description:
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Director of Faculty Research Activities who will be responsible for the direction and support of LAS faculty in research and scholarly activities, with particular emphasis on external funding for research.

This position will work with faculty throughout the college in the identification of grant opportunities and the development of successful major grant applications, including the coordination of large multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary research proposals. The incumbent will direct and provide support and service for all aspects of research activity. Duties include review, editing and assistance of the writing of proposals, including the coordination with finance experts within the college for proposal development. The position will maintain knowledge of faculty expertise and will lead the team formation of large multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary, multi-collaborative research and scholarly grant proposals from initial development to final closeout. 
The incumbent will be responsible for the development of a grantsmanship training program for faculty as well as for the tracking and reporting of faculty scholarly activity.


Duties:
·         Responsible for grant writing and working with faculty to develop grant proposals that will have an important budgetary and scholarly impact.
·         Assists in the development and coordination of large multi-investigators, multi-disciplinary research proposals, including obtaining and interpreting guidelines, initiating meetings, coordinating with other colleges and/or departments collaborating on proposals, establishing timelines and advancing narratives.
·         Reviews and edits draft proposals by faculty and staff for accuracy, completeness, stylistic consistency, logic, policy of funding institutions and budgets for compliance with federal and other regulatory requirements.
·         The position will develop grant training programs including workshops, group and individual training for faculty in an effort to increase the success rate in obtaining major grants, developing an understanding of university policies and procedures along with federal state, private and other regulations required for grant submission and management.
·         Oversees the annual faculty activity reporting and prepares, compiles and reports related analyses regarding the College’s faculty grant activities.
·         Develops and maintains knowledge of faculty expertise and alerts appropriate faculty when relevant funding opportunities arise.
·         Functions as the faculty grant expert including monitoring key sources of grant funding opportunities, compliance and regulatory updates.
·         Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:
·         Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Social Sciences, Humanities or other related field. Related Master’s degree or PhD is preferred.
·         A minimum of five (5) years combined work experience in research, which can be laboratory management, bench science experience along with developing and writing research grant proposals for submission in an academic or public institution of higher learning to major sponsors.
·         Excellent communication, presentation, organization, analytical and computer/pc skills, along with proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publishing….) and other related software.
·         Project management experience with preference to institutions of higher learning and/or research.
·         Experience with successfully developing and writing large, multi-disciplinary scientific grants in a higher education environment, along with an understanding of disciplinary standards of excellence at a research institution.
