World Business Chicago is seeking a Deputy Director for the Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs. This position will serve to support the Executive Director of the Plan, provide day-to-day guidance to the Plan Team in their work, and connect with partner initiatives in their work to extend the impact of the Plan. The Deputy Director is a full-time position that reports to the Executive Director of the Plan. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the Plan Executive Director in the internal guidance of Plan implementation, including:
    • Ensure alignment of the Plan with overall WBC and Board objectives
    • Guidance to staff on the execution of annual work programs and 3-5 year goals of the Plan
    • Preparing for regular meetings with the Plan Team, Plan Program Staff, and WBC Fellows including project prioritization, status updates, strategy and initiative level problem-solving
    • Meet with Staff, Interns via intensive weekly meetings to provide guidance on their work
    • Ongoing guidance on development of Plan catalytic initiatives
    • Day-to-day guidance to Plan Staff in development of Plan projects
    • Day-to-day oversight of the Technical Assistance Program
    • Serve as internal PoC for other WBC Business Units and internal WBC administrative development as it relates to the Plan
    • Deployment and use of CRM (Salesforce) within Plan Team
      • Support the Plan Executive Director guiding staff on external reporting on progress to Plan Steering Committee, Co-chairs, and WBC Board
      • Provide ongoing project development guidance to soon-to-be ‘spin-out’ initiatives to ensure continued success (development assistance with business plan, communications plan, financial plan, leadership needs)
      • Serve as a liaison to Plan initiative portfolio and develop successful working partnerships with ‘spun-out’ initiatives (i.e. mHub, Current, SINC, etc) and provide strategic guidance on continuing initiative development

  • Entrepreneurial approach is a must, and experience working in a start-up environment with evolving priorities and processes preferred
  • Strong interpersonal written/verbal communications skills
  • A passion for civic engagement that makes a difference for the region’s future
  • A good sense of diplomacy in dealing with confidential information

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a leadership role related to business development or economic planning, and has distinctive project management skills. The candidate should also have extensive experience working with a wide range of staff levels, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and have relevant expertise and experience in economic growth (economics, public sector work, workforce development, entrepreneurship, SME business growth, cluster strategies, infrastructure development for economic development, etc.). Distinctive problem structuring and execution skills, including experience establishing strategic plans, creating standard operating procedures, and managing programs and program budgets, desired. Relevant graduate degree or equivalent work experience preferred. IEDC certification or equivalent preferred.
