Job Description:
The Village of North Riverside is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Community Development.  This is a full time administrative position who manages, directs, supervises and coordinates all operational activities of the North Riverside Community Development Department. The Community Development Department includes the areas of urban planning, zoning and redevelopment, economic development, building code administration, property maintenance and code enforcement, and inspection services.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who possess the skills to positively lead and inspire others and has a passion for serving the local community.  The Community Development Director reports directly to the Village Administrator and is responsible for planning, promoting and collaborating with elected officials, departments, and external organizations on short- and long-range strategies and programs to market the Village of North Riverside, attract/retain businesses and actively engage in redevelopment efforts. 

North Riverside is a non-home rule community located 10 miles west of Chicago’s Downtown Loop in western Cook County.  Although the Village’s residential base is small, North Riverside is home to a vibrant and sizeable commercial district supported by the North Riverside Park Mall, a warehouse membership club, multiple car dealerships and numerous large retail shopping centers anchored by prominent national retailers and restaurants.  The Village has a total annual operating budget of approximately $35 million and is a full-service community offering essential police, fire, public works, recreation and administrative services.  

Minimum Preferred Qualifications:  
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s Degree in urban planning, public administration, business administration or closely related field 
  • Certified Planner from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP); Certified Urban Designer from the American Planning Association (APA); Certified Economic Developer from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC); or Certified Real Estate Inspector from the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) is highly desired 
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible senior management experience in municipal planning and zoning, building, community development or economic development, with a minimum of one (1) year of direct supervisory experience. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience 
Salary: 
The salary range for this position is between $80,000 and $140,000 with anticipated starting salary $90,000 +/- commensurate with knowledge, skills and experience.  An excellent benefits package is offered.
