Description:

Summary
The mission of Active Transportation Alliance is to make bicycling, walking and public transit so safe, convenient and fun that we will achieve a significant shift from environmentally harmful, sedentary travel to clean, active travel. We advocate for transportation that encourages and promotes safety, physical activity, health, recreation, social interaction, equity, environmental stewardship and resource conservation.

Active Transportation Alliance offers professional, mission-based transportation planning services to clients who seek a progressive and innovative approach to making bicycling, walking and transit a significant part of daily life in their community or region. Under the general direction of the Executive Director, the Director of Planning’s key responsibilities are to manage Active Trans’ Planning Department, provide technical planning and design expertise to staff and stakeholders, and analyze and comment on behalf of the organization regarding transportation projects and policies. The ideal candidate will take an entrepreneurial approach to planning that melds professional top-notch technical assistance with a strong voice for promoting sustainable, healthy and safe transportation.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities

Coordinate pedestrian, bicycle and transit planning and consulting services:
• Seek relationships with potential local and regional transportation planning clients
• Identify and respond to requests for proposals
• Recruit, train, supervise and mentor excellent planning staff
• Manage and track all contract timelines, budgets and deliverables

Advocate for world-class walking, bicycling and transit facilities:
• Provide technical assistance, advice and opinions to relevant policy makers and stakeholders
• Encourage and assist communities in applying for transportation funds in support of pedestrian/bike/transit projects
• Represent Active Trans’ advocacy goals externally as an expert spokesperson and presenter

Compile and share state-of-the art technical knowledge:
• Research, compile and maintain knowledge of best practices and innovations in transportation design, policies and engineering
• Maintain current knowledge of all relevant state, regional and federal transportation funding mechanisms
• Train and deliver presentations to key audiences (staff, community stakeholders, transportation professionals and advocates) on technical and infrastructure-related priorities.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
• Participate in Active Trans obligatory organizational events and activities
• Participate in Basic Traffic Cycling instruction (according to individual ability)
Additional Qualifications:

Qualifying Experience
• Minimum 3-5 years’ experience as a transportation planner
• Significant experience in pedestrian, bicycle and transit planning
• Staff management experience
• Sophisticated understanding of consultant/client relationships and dynamics
• Superior communications skills, including written, presentational and public relations
• A passion for the transformational nature of bicycling, walking and transit on community livability and sustainability
• A commitment to the Active Transportation Alliance mission, vision and goals
• Bachelor’s degree in urban planning required

Preferred Experience
• Masters degree in Public Policy, Urban Planning or other relevant area
• Proven track record in soliciting and managing contractual work
