Research Assistant, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago - Chicago, IL

As a Research Assistant at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago you will utilize analytical skills in the areas of Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics and Computer Science to support academic research and policy work by staff economists. Topics of interest to our economists include micro and macroeconomics, finance, regional economic markets, insurance markets, and economic inequality and inclusion. Research and policy projects help to inform and direct the Bank’s efforts to achieve its mission. Specific tasks that research assistants can expect to undertake include quantitative research analyses using economic and financial data; developing code for model estimation; collecting and managing data; and preparation of briefings.

This position is structured as part of a two-year program and requires a two-year commitment. You will work with a variety of economists on their specified team to acquire skills in how to work with data in order to answer research and policy questions. Such skills are valuable when pursuing graduate studies in economics and related fields as well as for careers in industry, policy, and /or the non-profit sector. The level of work required is considered entry-level and staff work under direct supervision. You will have no direct reports. We offer a very competitive salary and benefits package.

Your Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct statistical and economic analyses of current macroeconomic, microeconomic, and regional data, and provides support for the economists in their academic research and policy work.
  • Support the economists in their basic and applied research by following instructions to perform tasks including collecting data, conducting moderately complex statistical analysis, writing code for model estimation, and organizing the presentation of results.
  • Prepare a variety of charts, tables, and descriptive text for department management or other staff economists to use in their briefings of the President and the Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with economists at all stages of the research process – from literature reviews and data analyses to regressions and presentations of results [on some occasions, efforts will be substantial enough to lead to jointly authored articles with economists]
  • Recommend, initiates, plans, and executes research projects under the guidance of manager and department researchers.
  • Perform other duties, as requested.

Your Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (at minimum) with a strong quantitative background (econometrics, statistics, advanced calculus, or computer programming)
  • Evidence of aptitude for quantitative and analytical skills
  • Exposure to and experience using data/programming languages
  • Demonstrated interest in economics

Your Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of and experience applying economic theory and quantitative analysis techniques under the supervision of researchers.
  • Ability to use PC standard and statistical programs, such as but not limited to R, Python, STATA, MATLAB, ArcGIS, etc. to organize data and to perform advanced statistical and econometric analyses.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Job Summary

The Industry Relations Program Manager (Senior Industry Relations Representative), as part of a team reporting to the Industry Relations Manager, will coordinate engagement with the payments industry, facilitate industry collaboration and influence action to promote strategic payments improvement consistent with Federal Reserve goals.

You will
  • Develop strategic industry engagement programs to build favorable relationships with industry organizations to achieve strategic goals and raise the Fed’s visibility as a catalyst for payments improvement efforts.
  • Manage and implement industry engagement programs by developing detailed project plans, internal communications and education, and reports on program performance. 
  • Capture, synthesize and report key insights from industry research and interactions to inform business objectives and decisions.

Your Background

Supervision and Regulation Department: Consumer Compliance Division

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is searching for highly qualified candidates for an immediate opening for a Supervision Analyst to conduct data driven activities in support of supervisory objectives. Ideal candidates will have knowledge of housing, economic, and demographic data and sources, analytic skills including basic programming and query design knowledge and commitment to consumer protection. The position will be based in our landmark office in Chicago’s Financial District.

Job Summary


The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago plays a key role in supervising compliance with consumer protection laws for banks within the Seventh District and for the largest bank holding companies regulated by the Federal Reserve. Within the Supervision and Regulation Department, the Supervision Analyst team is responsible for collecting, compiling and disseminating data in support of individual and portfolio supervisory activity. Furthermore, the Supervision Analyst team is responsible for developing intelligence on trends, risks, and data to inform supervisory and policy development throughout the Federal Reserve System.

The Supervision Analyst will work with data sources and portfolio managers to assist in the use of data driven supervision efforts for consumer protection laws. The position will work closely with other Consumer Compliance Supervision Analysts, as well as Consumer Compliance Risk Specialists to build data for use in supervisory exams and activity, create workflows, enhance procedures, and identify emerging institutional and/or portfolio level risks. This position will work with the following (although not limited to) data sources: institutional loan level data, HMDA, Small Business (CRA) and census data, and internal supervisory or regulatory databases. This position also requires the ability to produce and analyze maps.

Essential Duties
  • Develop materials to support exam activities that are accurate, quality-based, procedurally compliant and timely
  • Provide consultative activities to portfolio managers and examiners-in-charge with regards to data for exam specific activities
  • Identify and craft automated solutions for data and workflow processes, while continuing to assume ownership for procedural documents and processes
  • Collaborate to identify additional reporting needs and execute on building and delivering materials to portfolio managers, as well as senior level management
  • Develop and maintain strong ongoing relationships with supervisory personnel within the business line, division and across Reserve Banks
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Coursework in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Business Administration preferred
  • Over three years of direct work-related experience.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience with SQL and or SAS preferred
  • Strong Excel Skills, including automation of routine functions, VBA a plus
  • Knowledge of GIS
  • Ability to work with external data, curate division data resources and compile new data sets
  • Knowledge of SharePoint, experience with WorkFlows or NinTex a plus.
  • Demonstrates independent thinking and decision-making abilities
  • Demonstrates strong written and oral communication abilities
  • Possesses and applies both specific and broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of consumer protection
