Planning and Development Services (PDS) of Kenton County (KY)

Planning and Development Services of Kenton County (PDS) is seeking a professional planner to join its Planning and Zoning Administration team. Located in the heart of the Cincinnati metro region, PDS serves 160,000 residents that live, work, and play in a dynamic setting.

Our landscape ranges from rural agricultural areas to true urban development patterns and everything in between. We are neighbors of downtown Cincinnati and are a key part of an energetic region that features diverse arts, major league sports, multiple higher education institutions, and the natural beauty of hills and valleys of Kentucky’s outer Bluegrass region.

Our Planning and Zoning Administration team conducts long-grange planning projects including updates to the comprehensive plan as well as small area studies, land use plans, and redevelopment plans for local jurisdictions. It also provides staff support to the Kenton County Planning Commission in the review of zoning map amendments, text amendments, and development plans. This position will be primarily focused on long-range planning activities but will also include current-planning roles from time to time.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, outgoing, and a team player with both internal and external teams. Strong written, oral, and visual communication skills are essential. Commitments to public involvement and citizen engagement are a central focus of this role. Previous experience with long-range project management and GIS analysis are a plus.

PDS will consider candidates with a minimum of one year and up to three years of professional experience in planning or related fields. The starting position (associate or principal planner) as well as starting salary will depend on the qualifications of the selected candidate. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in planning or landscape architecture is required.

SUMMARY
Administer zoning regulations as adopted by the City ofCovington, review proposed construction and development documents and issue zoning permits.  Responsible for staff support to Board of Adjustment.  Compile data from various sources, such as maps, reports, field and file investigations, for use in planning and economic development studies.  Assist public and city staff by answering questions and providing information related to zoning. Continually review and update zoning regulations as necessary and provide technical expertise related to planning initiatives and projects.  This position will report to the Economic Development Manager.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • At least three years of progressively responsible experience in planning or zoning administration; or the equivalent to a Graduate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in planning, public administration or related design or construction discipline or a combination of the above stated work experience and education.
  • Familiarity with the development process.
  • AICP Certification is preferred but not required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of applicable City, State and Federal rules, regulations and ordinances that impact Land Use and the ability to appropriately interpret and apply them.

Assistant Professor, URBAN AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS, The University of Louisville - Louisville, KY

Assistant Professor, URBAN AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
The Department of Urban and Public Affairs (UPA) at the University of Louisville invites applications for a tenure track appointment with a focus on Urban and Regional Planning. The position will begin August 1, 2016.  UPA offers three graduate degrees: Master of Urban Planning, Master of Public Administration, and a PhD in Urban and Public Affairs. This position will contribute primarily to the planning degree program, but faculty members participate in teaching, research and mentoring across all three degrees.

Qualifications for the position include: a Ph.D. in Urban Planning or related discipline, an emerging record of excellence in planning research; ability to teach in studio settings; AICP status (or the ability to obtain); experience in areas of planning and policy research in a collaborative academic setting; excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; an aptitude for working collaboratively with state and local governments; practitioner experience in planning settings; and an ability to work with community organizations and planning constituencies. Teaching expectations would include such core courses as Planning Theory and History and Land Use Planning. An ability to contribute to an existing Masters in Sustainability and a proposed undergraduate degree in Sustainability will be advantageous.
