Who: The Greater Chicago Food Depository is Chicago’s food bank, providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in the community. They do this in partnership with 700 agencies and programs including pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and responses for children, older adults and veterans. This network distributes food where it is needed most throughout Cook County.
What: The Director of Public Policy serves as part of the Community Impact leadership team, leading the organization's strategies to leverage policy change to end hunger. The Director serves as an expert on legislative policy related to food insecurity, public benefits, healthcare, and other anti-poverty issues significantly impacting individual and families with low incomes.
The Director identifies policy legislative and administration opportunities through written proposals that build a case for advancement. Additionally, the Director supports the development of strategic communication campaigns designed to mobilize coalition partners. Annually, directs the process to develop the policy agenda for approval by the CEO and the Board of Directors. Leads the charge to expand benefits outreach services by creating new collaborations to connect clients to additional public benefits and support. Leads a staff working on policy, advocacy, and benefits outreach. Success requires collaboration with a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders.

The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) drives principled solutions through rigorous analysis, reasoned negotiation, and respectful dialogue. Founded in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell, BPC combines politically-balanced policymaking with strong, proactive advocacy and outreach.
As the only Washington, DC-based think tank that actively promotes bipartisanship, BPC works to address the key challenges facing the nation. Our policy solutions are the product of informed deliberations by former elected and appointed officials, business and labor leaders, and academics and advocates who represent both ends of the political spectrum. We are currently focused on immigration, health care and nutrition, energy, national security, immigration, infrastructure and the economy.
The BPC is currently seeking a Senior Policy Analyst to assist with the organization's Housing and Infrastructure Policy Projects. This position is a versatile one, involving a variety of tasks. Responsibilities include research, analysis, writing, and editing; strategic policy and tactical thinking; organizational management of meetings, events, communications, and contacts; and proactive engagement on numerous other issues ranging from grant fundraising to blogging. The Senior Policy Analyst will be expected to learn quickly on the job, and will have the opportunity to directly interact and engage with top leaders in these fields. As part of a growing think tank, you will also be challenged to think creatively about non-policy issues such as project direction, strategy, and bipartisanship.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Project Director with all aspects of work
- Issue timely analysis of policy developments related to aging-in-place, senior housing, housing finance, infrastructure funding and financing, and other topics as needed
- Work with BPC administrative, development, communications, and legislative teams to develop outreach and media content, including op-eds, blog posts, infographics, fact sheets and other materials on topics that may include: federal housing programs, state and local best practices, infrastructure finance tools, public private partnerships and related investment projects
- Conduct outreach to gather information and build support for policy recommendations, such as meeting with government officials, housing and infrastructure practitioners, Members of Congress, media, etc.
- Conduct research, write reports, and secure timely release of information
- Supervise development and execution of events, issue-specific roundtable discussions and workshops, and other meetings
- Support development efforts and assist in preparation of regular correspondence with funders
- Assist in development and management of the policy project work plan
- Work closely with senior advisors and consultants
Qualifications:
- Ability to multi-task on numerous projects, large and small, in both collaborative and independent situations
- Strong research, writing and organizational skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Knowledge of housing, infrastructure and/or finance policies. Strong applicants with experience in only one of these fields are welcome to apply.
- Preference for 3 -5 years public policy or Capitol Hill experience
- Advanced degree in public policy, community development, urban planning, economics, finance, or a related discipline. Applicants with bachelor's degrees and directly relevant work experience will also be considered.
