- Serves as coordinator for the CDOT plan review committee to ensure compliance with city code, department policy, and other governmental regulations as required.
- Evaluates development project proposals submitted by private citizens or developers and public agencies for conformity with city development goals and transportation safety objectives. This includes site plan review, contextual review, public way use, and review of traffic impact studies.
- Provides technical assistance to citizens, community organizations, delegate agencies and developers concerning planning and development projects and related work plans.
- Works with operating city departments, governmental agencies and private consultants on major planning, policy, and public way use projects.
- Prepares project summary reports and briefings for the Commissioner’s office, the Mayor’s office, and City Council committees.
- Represents the department at community forums, civic and business organization meetings, and conferences to discuss planning activities and projects.
- Functions as liaison with state and federal agencies involved in collaborative planning projects and review.
- Research, review, and interpretation of state and federal legislation pertaining to transportation and public way planning and policy, preparing position papers for management’s review.
- Participates in and coordinates the conduct of planning surveys and studies and the completion of planning reports detailing community transportation trends and their impact on current and future resources.

About the Program
Do you have a passion for encouraging people to bike, walk and use public transportation? Are you an invested member of the Edgewater community? The City of Chicago Department of Transportation has launched a project called Go Edgewater, an educational campaign to help Edgewater residents walk, bike, and use transit more often. Go Edgewater wishes to hire two temporary outreach ambassadors to conduct community outreach and administrative tasks for the program.
Go Edgewater is one of five similar programs being implemented in Chicago neighborhoods between 2013 and 2016. The program piloted in 2013 with Go Bronzeville and continued in 2014 with Go Pilsen. This summer Go Edgewater will launch simultaneously with Go Edgewater. The goals of the program are to:
• Reduce drive-¬alone trips of residents
• Increase trips made by foot, bicycle, transit, and carpool
• Increase the use of bike share, particularly at stations within Edgewater
• Foster a sense of community around walking and biking activities
• Support local businesses and existing community efforts

Ideal candidates are self-starters who are community focused and have a desire to help their fellow Edgewater neighbors bike, walk and use transit more often. Candidates should be approachable, reliable, and work well in a team as well as independently. Ambassadors will work 40 hours per week (including some weekends and evenings) both indoors and outdoors (in any weather) from June to September 2015. Approximately 60% of time will be spent on office tasks and 40% on outreach and events.
The Go Edgewater Outreach Ambassadors will have these duties:
• Assemble packets of transportation materials at the Active Trans office (in River North), including organizing orders, data entry, and other administrative and promotional tasks.
• Deliver packets to Edgewater households from the Active Trans office by foot, bike, and/or transit.
• Appear at street festivals, fairs, and other public events to promote and explain the Go Edgewater program, invite residents to participate, answer questions about transportation options, and distribute materials (such as maps and brochures).

- Work with elected officials, advocacy groups, and the public at large to gather input on projects and policies and setup, attend and present these efforts at public meetings to ensure public awareness and coordination.
- Coordinate implementation of projects with State, Federal and County Agencies as required.
- See, write and secure grants for funding for a wide range of project types and initiatives.
- Support the Livable Streets Director with the implementation and development of placemaking, complete streets, and environmental guidelines and policies.
- Work with Law to coordinate easements, use agreements, proposed changes to municipal code and other legal documentation to ensure project delivery.
- Manage program budgets and schedules to ensure on time and on budget project delivery of capital projects

| Job Number: 262162 Description JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Coordinating Planner City of Chicago Department of Transportation Number of Positions: 1 This position is contained within the Livable Streets Section in the Division of Project Development. The position is responsible for the coordination, management, and oversight of planning and capital projects within the Streetscape and Make Way for People Programs. This position will manage and implement various initiatives under Make Way for People including the People Plaza initiative; the development and implementation of policies including placemaking and environmental guidelines; and urban design projects including streetscapes, riverwalks and trails. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Plan, manage, and support innovative capital & planning projects for the implantation of CDOT’s Streetscape and placemaking efforts within the Livable Streets Program in compliance with CDOT’s planning policies including Complete Streets Guidelines, Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Guidelines and forthcoming Placemaking Guidelines. Manage the Make Way for People Program, including review of applications, the People Plaza initiative, marketing and communications, and grant writing and execution. Work with CDOT staff to ensure projects are coordinated within CDOT and with sister departments. Review plans and specifications for conformity and accuracy. Evaluate, review and process consultant proposals and contracts. Set up and secure funding and prepare cost estimates. Track contract schedules and implantation. Participate in construction management and closeout. Work with elected officials, advocacy groups, and the public at large to gather input on projects and policies and setup, attend and present these efforts at public meetings to ensure public awareness and coordination. Coordinate implementation of projects with State, Federal and County Agencies as required. See, write and secure grants for funding for a wide range of project types and initiatives. Support the Livable Streets Director with the implementation and development of placemaking, complete streets, and environmental guidelines and policies. Work with Law to coordinate easements, use agreements, proposed changes to municipal code and other legal documentation to ensure project delivery. Manage program budgets and schedules to ensure on time and on budget project delivery of capital projects Written and oral communications with elected officials, IDOT, the public, and other organizations Note: The list of essential duties is not intended to be inclusive; there may be other duties that are essential to particular positions within the class Location: Department of Transportation, 30 N. LaSalle, Chicago, IL 60602 Hours: 8:30am to 4:30pm THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning or a directly related field, plus five years of work experience in the development and management of major planning or research studies, including two years in a supervisory experience related to the responsibilities of the position, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience provided that the minimum degree requirement is met Disclaimer - "Accredited" means any nationally or regionally accredited college, university, or law school where the applicant is enrolled in or has completed an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Juris Doctorate degree program . Selection Requirement: This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise as part of the interview. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
