City Planner V, Chicago Department of Transportation


  • Serves as coordinator for the CDOT plan review committee to ensure compliance with city code, department policy, and other governmental regulations as required.
  • Evaluates development project proposals submitted by private citizens or developers and public agencies for conformity with city development goals and transportation safety objectives. This includes site plan review, contextual review, public way use, and review of traffic impact studies.
  • Provides technical assistance to citizens, community organizations, delegate agencies and developers concerning planning and development projects and related work plans.
  • Works with operating city departments, governmental agencies and private consultants on major planning, policy, and public way use projects.
  • Prepares project summary reports and briefings for the Commissioner’s office, the Mayor’s office, and City Council committees.
  • Represents the department at community forums, civic and business organization meetings, and conferences to discuss planning activities and projects.
  • Functions as liaison with state and federal agencies involved in collaborative planning projects and review.
  • Research, review, and interpretation of state and federal legislation pertaining to transportation and public way planning and policy, preparing position papers for management’s review.
  • Participates in and coordinates the conduct of planning surveys and studies and the completion of planning reports detailing community transportation trends and their impact on current and future resources.
  • Conducts site inspections of future development sites, works in progress, and completed projects to ensure adherence to development plans, as required.
  • Prepares grant applications, proposals, and preliminary budgets for planning and policy projects.
  • May provide direction to junior level staff.

Qualifications
 
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning,
Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Transportation Planning, Environmental
Planning, or a directly related field, plus five (5) years of planning work experience; or an

equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, provided that the minimum degree requirement is met.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Previous work experience in Transportation Planning.
  • Master’s degree in urban planning or a related field.  
  • Previous work experience with the principles and practices of transportation planning, design, and/or policy analysis.
  • Previous work experience with analyzing data on economic, physical and social factors affecting transportation issues and policies. 
  • Previous work experience using GIS, spreadsheets and statistical software packages.
  • Previous work experience analyzing and evaluating project proposals.
Salary: $67,536.00
