Transportation Planner 1, Legislative Aide - Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety, Alderman Daniel La Spata

Summary

This role is written for an early career urban planner, transportation planner, or mobility activist to be hired under the “Legislative Aide” job title within the City Council of the City of Chicago. This role will serve under Alderman Daniel La Spata, Chair of the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety, with the purpose of conducting independent planning analyses, community engagement, communications, Committee administrative support functions, Freedom of Information Act functions, and engagement with City Departments for the advancement of transportation and mobility
policy.

Average Salary: $75,000

Substantive goals for the position will include:
  • Reforming the Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety to include independent reporting and planning efforts to improve safety in the City
  • Assisting City Departments, where necessary, to improve traffic safety and eliminate traffic and pedestrian deaths.
  • Developing and implementing a four-year Committee plan in conjunction with the Chief of Staff (1 st Ward, as policy liaison to the Alderman); Committee Policy Director; and Committee Intergovernmental Affairs personnel.
Routine tasks for the position will include:
  • Implementing administrative support for all Committee meetings, as directed by the Chair and Vice Chair
  • Fulfilling Freedom of Information Act duties as required by law and as directed by the Department of Law and Legislative Reference Bureau as needed
  • Communicating with City Departments to ensure the smooth functioning of the Committee
  • Maintaining all Committee records, as directed by the Alderman and in conjunction with advice from Legislative Reference Bureau and Department of Law as needed.
  • Developing regular communications via social media and Committee website

This role includes one vacancy, which may be filled under the following tracks:
  • An urban planning or transportation planning track, in which the ideal applicant will demonstrate completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in the field or a substantially related public policy field. (Or, a High School Diploma / Equivalence or Associate’s Degree plus substantive demonstration of transportation planning experience)
  • A mobility activist track, in which the ideal applicant will demonstrate substantive experience in transportation or mobility advocacy.
