JOB SUMMARY:
This position is considered a civil enforcement officer responsible for the effective enforcement of community maintenance standards, performing inspections and services necessary for effective enforcement in residential, commercial, and industrial properties and businesses as required under Village codes and ordinances. Position requires self-discipline, accurate scheduling, spontaneous problem resolution, excellent verbal and written communication skills, provision of expert testimony in courts of law, and working autonomously. Decisions made by the inspector have a significant impact on the economic conditions of businesses and property and livelihood of residents.
Required to perform inspections and/or duties as designated, beyond the normal work day or work week including working Saturdays once every five weeks or as needed based on departmental need. The ideal candidate will need to effectively communicate to a full range of people, be able to work cooperatively and effectively with others to achieve common goals, and shift gears comfortably. We are looking to add a team member capable of managing and prioritizing multiple projects with thoroughness and accuracy. Proficiency in other languages is a plus.
STARTING PAY RATE: $30.41 - $34.00 per hour based on a 40-hour workweek. Salary dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is $30.41 - $44.75. This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement available on our website.

JOB DUTIES:
- Responsible for understanding and applying Village of Schaumburg Code of Ordinances and any adopted codes and ordinances for effective enforcement of departmental procedures.
- Issues various warning notices, tickets and citations as directed, involving violations of the Village of Schaumburg Code of Ordinances, and/or other related Village adopted ordinances and codes.
- Pertinent to assigned inspection and duties, identifies and submits related code sections of code violations in written form and maintains files of logs of written reports, letters, memorandums, inspection findings, and incoming/outgoing correspondence.
- Investigates complaints regarding licenses, property maintenance, and related issues and performs inspections as required. Also responsible for contacting and notifying responsible parties involved, and resolving said code infractions to achieve code compliance.
- Reviews and resolves complaints between parties involved, and as necessary, locate and submit any related code sections and attempts to resolve said complaint(s) or code infraction informally between all parties involved.
- Provides technical assistance, correspondence, and/or notices, to the general public, and Village personnel, regarding the Village of Schaumburg Code of Ordinances.
- Organizes daily work schedule, and completes designated or scheduled inspections and/or assignments. Responsible for managing an inspection schedule for certain properties in the village and providing progress reports to the Code Enforcement Supervisor on a regular basis.
- Prepares and maintains documentation and appears in court as necessary or as directed to testify regarding tickets issued, code hearings and any other related issues. Prepares and submits related documentation code sections of code violations that may pertain to court hearings.
- Conducts in office plan/drawing review as required for discrepancy with Village adopted codes and/or ordinances and reviews job site plans/drawings, such as site plans, plats, building façade drawings, or architectural floor plans, for any discrepancy or deviation from Village approved plans/drawings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s Degree in general studies with course work in Code Inspection, Building Inspection, Construction Technology or related code enforcement field.
- A minimum of two years of experience in a position involving customer service and customer complaint investigation skills. Code enforcement or inspection experience preferred.
- Certification in Property Maintenance and Housing Inspection with the International Code Council or equivalent preferred, or ability to obtain within one year of hire required.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Proficiency with current computer software systems, including email, calendar programs, job specific software, and customer service systems preferred or within the first six months of employment
