Urban Planning and Development Specialist

Urban Planning and Development Specialist

CPCS is a growing, dynamic, employee-owned consulting company based in Canada with regional offices in several international locations. Our team specializes in advising clients on planning, development and commercialization in the Transport, Power and Urban Development sectors. The Urban Development sector is expanding and requires the full time services of a senior Urban Planning and Development specialist to report to CPCS’s newly opened regional office in Nairobi, Kenya.

As an Urban Planning and Development consultant, you will be required to engage with the Urban Development team on a wide variety of urban and regional planning exercises including land use planning, socio-economic analysis, infrastructure and environmental planning, housing policy and development initiatives, stakeholder participation and institutional capacity building. You will ideally be based in the Nairobi Office working under the direct guidance of the Head of Urban Planning and the Vice President for the Eastern and Southern Africa Division. This position will require international travel.

Roles and Responsibilities

The duties of this position, include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide, in an integrated manner, urban planning, development and housing expertise including data collection, analysis, conceptual and detailed plan preparation, and stakeholder participation
  • Engage in team work in both field and office situations
  • Coordinate local project teams and deliverables
  • Participate in general office activities.

Key Qualifications

We are looking for a professional with at least 10 years of proven, international practice in urban planning and development projects with a proactive, open and enthusiastic personality who:

  • Is self-driven with a sense of initiative, wants to succeed and has excellent interpersonal skills
  • Presents excellent team work ability to operate in a variety of field and office conditions working in cross-cultural settings
  • Holds relevant degree(s) in urban planning or equivalent qualifications
  • Demonstrates high levels of proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Graphics Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), AutoCad/ArchiCAD, Sketch-Up, etc. Knowledge of GIS would be an asset. Good graphic skills are essential
  • Is proficient in English and demonstrates clear and concise English writing and report organisational skills. Knowledge of other languages would be an asset
  • Has effective time management and organizational skills
  • Has played significant field roles in related projects in Africa or other developing regions
