Job Description

The Berkeley Charleston Dorchester (BCD) Council of Governments, a regional planning agency located in the Charleston, SC metropolitan area, is seeking to fill a professional planner’s position with emphases in transportation and land use planning. The BCD region is located on the coast of South Carolina and has a population of over 650,000. The BCDCOG staffs the Charleston Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for transportation planning, as well as the region’s rural transportation planning process.

Responsibilities for this position include planning and project management within the program areas of comprehensive transportation land use and environmental planning, and other related activities. Duties will include preparation, implementation, and administration of planning projects related to region wide transportation improvement programs, as well as projects for municipal and county jurisdictions within the region.

The ideal candidate holds a Master’s Degree in planning and has three years of professional planning experience, or a Master’s/Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with major emphasis in planning and five years experience (preferably with an MPO or other transportation planning agency) may be substituted by a candidate with extensive experience in project management. AICP certification is also preferred. Strong skills in data management, communications, presentation and computer programs (GIS a plus) are necessary, along with experience in one or more of the following areas: transportation planning, land use regulations, growth management, urban design, and/or environmental planning.
