The Teamsters Strategic Research and Campaigns Department conducts research on a broad range of industries and companies and develops research products and analyses to inform the union’s growth, organizing, and strategic campaign goals. Strategic research is a crucial component of both the campaigns implemented by the department, and the organizing goals of the union.

What: We are looking for research analysts to conduct industry and corporate research to inform strategy in organizing and contract campaigns. Research analysts develop expertise in industries of interest and apply the department’s research and campaigns model to understanding major corporations and Teamster employers. Research includes financial performance, business strategy, collective bargaining history, and competitive environment, as well as significant data collection and analysis projects.

Job description
Our research teams conduct industry, corporate, real estate and political research and analysis to develop and carry out campaigns focused on winning economic justice for low wage, primarily immigrant hospitality workers. Our campaigns organize non-union workers and secure improved standards for existing union members in the food service, gaming and casino, and hotel industries.

Job responsibilities will include:

• Research companies using a wide variety of sources, including published databases, on-line and Internet sources
• Conduct local and field research on companies, industries and/or real estate development projects
• Develop company analyses and adapt them for various audiences (e.g. leadership & staff, workers, stockholders, political & regulatory bodies, the public)
• Identify and analyze new development projects in our industries and represent the union during the planning & political approval process
• Communicate and build relationships with a wide variety of players including community organizations, company officials, customers, government staff and elected leaders
• Develop and carry out campaign strategies and tactics
• Work with UNITE HERE members, organizers, regional staff and elected leaders; assist in moving campaigns forward through organizing, leading actions, doing political work, as needed.

Desired Qualifications include:

• Passion for, and commitment to, fighting for workers' rights
• BA degree or relevant research and/or activist experience (labor, political, urban planning, or community/campus)
• Strong analytical, writing, computer and interpersonal/organizing skills
• Willingness to travel extensively, to work long and sometimes irregular hours, and relocate as necessary
• Familiarity with database and word processing software
• Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines
• Reliable car and driver's license

Description

Purpose: 
The Researcher 1 supports union campaigns, community organizing, and political campaigns. This position also involves economic analysis, industry research, financial analysis, employment law analysis, and other research analysis as assigned. Although researchers are expected to work across divisions, the current open position will be focused on health care and/or long-term care divisions.
Location: Chicago

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Compile, summarize, and analyze data on industries, specific companies, individuals and issues in support of health care and/or long-term care division campaigns
• Assist in production of written materials for internal and external audiences
• Assist in maintenance of databases and development of other data resources
• Respond to requests for information and analysis from organizers or other staff
• Define, develop, continually revise, and execute a research work plan for multiple campaigns; meet deadlines
• Synthesize relevant facts/issues from a large amount of information/data
• Learn and develop new skills to keep pace in analysis of rapidly-changing industries
• Work collaboratively with research team to identify and address cross-division Local issues, opportunities, and challenges
• Perform other duties as required to support the department and its mission

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Researcher 1 must be able to organize his or her time, and develop and carry out plans with minimum supervision. S/he must also be able to receive direction from and interact with his or her supervisor as necessary, as well as incorporating guidance from leading members of project teams outside the research discipline.

Working Conditions:

Key Qualification Criteria:

• A strong commitment to progressive social change; activist or organizing experience is a plus
• BA or BS degree from an accredited four-year college or university in labor, public health, economics, social science, or a related field and/or prior research experience
• Possession of basic research skills
• Possession of excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
• Ability to work well under tight deadlines and in a team environment
• Knowledge of unions and their philosophies
• Knowledge of research techniques and processes
• Knowledge of quantitative techniques and analysis
• Demonstrated comfort with numbers and technology
• Knowledge of a variety of computer based research tools
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours when needed to meet campaign demands
• Familiarity with health care and/or long-term care industries is a plus
