Assistant Planner, Greater Chatham Initiative

Description

The Greater Chatham Initiative (an economic development non-profit organization that serves
south side communities) is looking for an assistant planner to help create a corridor
revitalization plan. The target corridor, named the Mahalia Jackson Cultural District (MJCD), is a
1-mile stretch of 79th St. running from State St. to Cottage Grove Ave.
Key Tasks:
  • Assist with writing the new corridor plan (draft text to be incorporated into the planning document)
  • Assist with generating graphics (tables, graphs, maps, etc.)
  • Assist with community engagement/outreach activities
  • Attend public meetings regarding MJCD and take thorough notes documenting the discussion that occurs
  • Work together with GCI staff to organize and synthesize public input
  • Review and incorporate existing research and documentation related to the corridor
Skills/Background:
  • Strong writing skills
  • Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign
  • GIS
  • Research/Analysis
  • Experience with corridor revitalization
  • Knowledge of urban planning/economic development principles
  • Familiarity with the south side of Chicago
Details:
  • $50/hour
  • 15-20 hours/week
  • Start date: June 1, 2023
  • Duration: until the corridor revitalization plan has been completed (probably sometime in mid-October, 2023)
