Transportation Planner - Sam Schwartz Consulting, LLC

Job Summary

Sam Schwartz, a TYLin Company, is seeking a full time Transportation Planner for our Chicago office to be part of a dynamic team that provides a range of planning services for public, private, and non-profit clients, including corridor studies, safety research and analysis, strategic planning, and community-wide multi-modal transportation plans. The planner will be part of an interdisciplinary team of consultants (planning, urban design, transportation engineering) and contribute to a wide variety of activities to support projects including research; data collection and analysis; mapping and geospatial analysis; public and stakeholder outreach; and development of maps, reports, presentations, and graphics.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of transportation planning and the ability to communicate concepts clearly and concisely verbally, through writing, and graphically. Responsibilities & Qualifications


The selected individual will perform a variety of tasks, such as: 

  • Conducting site visits and field observations,
  • Performing traffic and transportation analyses,
  • Creating spreadsheet-based models,
  • Developing maps and conducting geospatial analysis,
  • Preparing high-quality graphics,
  • Writing technical reports,
  • Developing presentation materials, and
  • Preparing conceptual designs of proposed projects.

Skills and Qualifications  

Ideal candidates will possess the following qualities: 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, 
  • Ability to develop high-quality graphics to support communications materials,
  • Strong command of transportation and urban planning concepts,
  • Command of technical analysis supporting transportation decisions,
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite,
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS (including Network Analyst, Spatial Analyst, and ArcGIS Online),
  • Proficiency in SketchUp or other graphics software preferred, and
  • Proficiency managing and analyzing large, complex datasets preferred.

Requirements  

Candidates should meet the following requirements: 

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or equivalent degree preferred,
  • 1-5 years of experience, and
  • Authorized to work in the US.
