The Chicago Workers Collaborative is a nationally recognized worker rights
organization formed by temporary staffing workers to build power and raise labor
standards in the temporary staffing industry.
CWC seeks an Organizer based in our Chicago Worker Center to build workers' power
to affect change in the workplace and community of temporary stafing workers. In
particular, the organizer will be CWC's point person in the Justice for Bakery Workers
Campaign, which seeks to organize temp staffing workers in Chicago's baking industry
in collaboration with the Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers
International Union (BCTGM) Local 1, for higher wages, safer working conditions, and
more workplace rights. The Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) will support this effort
through community mobilizing and their communications capacity, to help others
understand the importance of Justice for Bakery Workers, and of converting temp jobs
to direct-hire positions to rebuild our economy.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Develops, trains, and supports worker leaders.
2. With consultation from the Organizing Director, develops long-term strategic
campaigns to advance the interests and mission of the organization, with primary
responsiibiity for the Justice for Bakery Workers Campaign.
3. Uses good judgment, both political and strategic, to advance interests of
organization
4. Assumes responsibility and coordinates all aspects of events/actions by himself or
herself
5. Able to manage a crisis to the benefit of the organization and its mission and goals,
in consultation with the Organizing Director or in the Organizing Director's absence
on a temporary basis
6. Develop strategic alliances with elected officials, unions, and other organizations in
order to advance the interests of the organization and its legislative and workplace
campaigns
Required Qualifications
Strong demonstrated commitment to worker rights, immigrant rights, and racial
justice/racial unity in community and labor organizing;
Significant life experience in the low-wage labor sector, either as a worker or an
organizer
Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills, collegial attitude and interest in
mentoring new and/or inexperienced worker organizers;
Bilingual English/Spanish both written and spoken
Commitment to own professional growth.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience organizing Latino and/or temporary workers;
Experience working in the non-profit community.
Salary Range and Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include health plan
as well as vacation and sick days.
Start Date
Expected start date will be in January 2014.
