Fisheries and Seafood Policy Associate Full Time, 12-Month Position
Stonington, ME—Penobscot East Resource Center (PERC) is seeking to fill a position that requires fisheries outreach and business planning expertise plus exceptional project management and fisheries policy knowledge. Reporting to the Director of the Downeast Groundfish Initiative, the Fisheries and Seafood Policy Associate will develop and execute a new project whereby new fishermen, using sustainable fishing technology and fishing practices and connected to place-based communities can develop economically successful groundfishing businesses. The position requires confidence in working with New England commercial fishermen.
Founded in 2003, Penobscot East Resource Center is a mission-driven and fast paced organization based in Stonington, Maine working to secure a future for fishing communities in eastern Maine through leadership training, innovative policy work, and engaging fishermen's knowledge and voice for collaborative science and long term marine stewardship.
Key Responsibilities include: a) Develop a new community economic development project to create a model for ‘new entry’ in the New England groundfish fishery; b) develop a New England region-wide community-scale fishermen’s network of permit buyers and sellers; c) support the development of Penobscot East's food policy programs including development of a use of a trademark marketing Sentinel Fishery catches. The primary responsibility is to conduct a newly-funded project by Penobscot East that facilitates community-scale fishermen’s entry into the groundfish fishery under the new catch share management system. The job involves meeting objectives that include establishing a model whereby new fishermen, using sustainable fishing technology and fishing practices and connected to place-based communities can develop economically successful groundfishing businesses
Requirements: College graduate/Masters Degree desirable and 2-3 years experience (business, non-profit or fisheries policy.)
