Cook County Complete Streets Coordinator
Summary
In March 2010, The Cook County Department of Public Health was awarded $16 million in federal “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” (CPPW) stimulus funds to combat obesity in suburban Cook County through policy, systems and environmental change. Active Transportation Alliance has been contracted to provide training, transportation planning and other technical assistance services for this high profile, national project through March 2012, focusing on increasing opportunities for daily physical activity through walking, bicycling and transit use. Under the general supervision of the Director of Education and Public Affairs, the Cook County Complete Streets Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to secure government support at the Cook County level for Complete Streets.
Essential Duties and Accountabilities
Training and Education
• Research and draft a Cook County Bicycle and Pedestrian Design Guidelines
• Develop processes, procedures and timeline for the implementation of the Cook County Complete Streets Policy
• Train county, sub-regional council and local government staff on effective implementation of the Cook County Complete Streets Policy and the Design Guidelines
• Develop policy briefs, presentations and other communication and marketing materials
Public Affairs
• Win support from regional and sub-regional governmental bodies for Complete Streets principles and implementation of Design Guidelines
• Assist other project staff in developing sustainable support at local levels for Complete Streets principles and implementation of Design Guidelines
• Create sustainability within Cook County government for bicycle and pedestrian facility planning and promotion.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
• Participate in Active Trans obligatory organizational events and activities
• Participate in program evaluation and assessment activities
• Attend meetings for overall Communities Putting Prevention to Work project
Qualifying Experience
• A passion for the transformational nature of bicycling, walking and transit on community livability and sustainability
• Proven technical mastery of bicycle and pedestrian planning principles
• Thorough understanding of Complete Streets Policies and practices
• A commitment to Active Transportation Alliance mission, vision and goals
• Demonstrated government relations experience at local, county or regional level
• Excellent writing and public relations skills
• Masters degree in Public Administration, Public Policy of Urban Planning; or other relevant field of study
Preferred Experience
• A minimum of 2-4 years experience working for local, county or regional government in a related field, or comparable experience in non-profit or corporate setting
• Primary authorship for substantial technical training materials
• At least 2 years of GIS experience

Start Date: July 6, 2010
Term: This is a full-time position ending no later than March 31, 2012. The position will be based at the Active Transportation Alliance office in Chicago’s River North community.
Salary and Benefits
Up to $40,000 per year depending upon experience and skills. The Active Transportation Alliance offers a progressive benefit program that includes health, dental, and retirement options.
