Better Blocks Youth Summer Internship, Active Transportation Alliance

Better Blocks Youth Summer Internship

The Active Transportation Alliance is seeking a group of teen interns to assist in conducting Better Blocks Workshops. Work will be carried out under the direction of the Advocacy and Community Outreach departments.

As a Better Blocks intern, you would be reaching out to residents in Chicago neighborhoods including Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Garfield Park, North Lawndale and Little Village to help residents create safer and more livable streets.

Key tasks:
· Lead youth activities at block party workshops
· Document workshops through photographs and notes
· Organize and lead mini-bike rides
· Give presentations on basic bike safety and maintenance
· Office work and data entry

Qualifications:
· Ages 16-18
· Feel comfortable speaking in public
· Be able to get around the city by walking, biking or public transportation
· Have basic bike safety and/ or maintenance knowledge
· Be familiar with your neighborhood
· Proficient in Microsoft Office and have basic typing skills
· Be responsible, punctual and organized
· Own a bicycle and helmet in good working condition
· Able to work early evenings and weekends
· Able to work outdoors all day and in any weather.
· Works well in a team, and fosters team spirit

· Bilingual Spanish-English is a plus

Term/Compensation:
· 3-month internship starting June 2010 and ending September 2010
· Average of 20 hours per week
· $1000 stipend awarded upon completion
