For more than 25 years, Chicago has celebrated bicycles during the month of June. The Active Transportation Alliance has been involved in Chicago Bike Week in recent years by organizing the Bike Commuter Challenge and this year will be taking over the production of the Chicago Bike Week Rally to take place June 10 – 17 with the rally on the 10th. The Chicago Bike Week Manager will play a lead role in organizing the Chicago Bike Week Rally and overseeing the Bike Commuter Challenge. The goal of the Bike Commuter Challenge is to connect with area organizations and businesses to encourage their employees to bicycle to work and track their trips. Active Trans provides participating organizations with a packet of materials, employee trainings and technical support. Winning organizations in several categories are invited to attend an awards party. Throughout the week, Active Trans hosts 25 “Bike Pit Stops” around the region where bike commuters can grab free coffee, get a bike check, learn about Active Trans and hang out with other bike commuters. In 2016 the programming may expand to include a small number of ‘bike-away’ after-work and other Bike Week events. Each year more than 6000 employees from over 1000 organizations in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs participate in the Bike Commuter Challenge and over 3000 attend the Chicago Bike Week Rally.

Definition and Purpose
Under the supervision of the Director of Events and Marketing, the Chicago Bike Week Manager promotes, manages, and executes the Chicago Bike Week Rally, Bike Commuter Challenge and other Bike to Work Week outreach and event logistics. The position is temporary, requiring approximately 20- 30 hours per week for 12 to 14 weeks from mid-March through mid-June, with an increased time commitment preceding and during the event week.

The Chicago Bike Week Manager will be a member of the Active Trans Events team and will also be required to assist with weekend-of-event duties for MB Bike the Drive May 27-29, 2016.

Qualifications

• Strong communication skills
• Tech Savvy with demonstrated experience in the following:              
  Microsoft Office (especially Excel); Database Management (Raiser’s Edge or other Blackbaud products); Social media management and strategy; Email campaign management (Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, Luminate, etc.); Website content management
• Experience with event planning and sponsorship fulfillment
• Strong multi-tasking abilities
• Strong time management abilities
• Self-motivated worker able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
• Available for occasional early morning and after-work events, especially during the event week
• Ability to speak and write authoritatively about bike commuting

Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate recruiting and outreach to new and previous participants of the Bike Commuter Challenge, plus volunteers
• Coordinate marketing and publicity with Director of Events and Marketing
• Deliver Bike to Work Presentations at participating organizations
• Coordinate all participant communications for the Bike Commuter Challenge
• Manage procurement, assembly, and distribution of information packets, including printed and downloadable materials
• Manage all permitting and logistics for the Chicago Bike Week Rally in Daley Plaza
• Assist with sales for booth space at the Chicago Bike Week Rally
• Coordinate “Bike Pit Stops” every morning throughout the week and other events as needed
• Assist with program wrap-up, including collecting results
• Produce the Team Leader post-party after Bike to Work week in coordination with the Sr. Event Manager
• Provide Event Support the weekend-of-event for MB Bike the Drive (May 27-29)

Salary and benefits
This position pays $10-15 per hour, depending on experience. The position is temporary, requiring approximately 20 hours per week for 12-15 weeks, weekly hours may increase as the event nears, and additional time commitment is required during the event week (40+ hours).

Bicycle Planner II/Senior

As a Bicycle Planner, you will develop and implement the City’s Bicycle Master Plan using the Five E's of Bicycle Planning (Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation & Planning) to work towards making Colorado Springs a Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly City as designated by the League of American Bicyclists within the next five years. In this position, you will also serve as the senior technical resource on all Colorado Springs bicycle issues.

Typical Responsibilities:

• Develop and manage programs to increase bike-to-work mode share
• Review development applications and plans to ensure bicycle infrastructure is adequately addressed
• Improve and manage a bicycle parking program
• Assist other organizations with development of a downtown-focused bike share system
• Collaborate with other stakeholders to boost bicycle-related tourism
• Plan and organize bicycle-focused public education and bike ambassador programs
• Develop and prioritize bicycle projects for implementation by various federal and local funding mechanisms, including the regional TIP (Transportation Improvement Program)
• Identify and pursue grants to supplement the City’s investment in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
• Serve as staff liaison to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee (city’s bike and pedestrian subcommittee for the Citizens Transportation Advisory Board)
• Coordinate implementation of bike and pedestrian projects with other capital improvements being developed by various city departments
• Support implementation of City's complete streets policy and report on its effectiveness to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee and other active transportation stakeholder groups
• Work with fellow staff and active transportation stakeholder groups to identify and support implementation of priority projects funded by the Bike Tax and Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in planning, geography, public administration, architecture, or a related field.

Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license.

In addition to the qualifications above, the experience below is also required.

Planner II: Three years of full-time experience in planning, civil engineering, development review facilitation, or a related field.

Senior Planner: Five years of full-time responsible planning experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in urban planning or a related field.

Five years of full-time experience in developing bicycle infrastructure policies and design.

Experience in securing and managing grant funding.

Experience with professional associations related to active transportation.

Institute of Traffic Engineers Transportation Planning certification.

Member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.
