Research Specialist (Social Science), Great Cities Institute

Job Summary:

The Great Cities Institute (GCI) of College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking one or more full-time (100% time) Research Specialist(s) to contribute to the design and delivery of its research projects.   The Research Specialist (Social Science) will also collaborate with researchers to develop, execute and interpret research projects while implementing complex data collection and study methods.

GCI was founded in 1995 as a key research component of UIC's Great Cities program, which represents and advances UIC's metropolitan commitment. UIC is the largest institution of higher learning in the Chicago area and is classified as a Research University/Very High Research Activity by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.  CUPPA houses two academic departments, one undergraduate program, and eight research centers and institutes.

GCI’s mission includes sponsoring “research, service, and educational programs aimed at improving the quality of life of people living in Chicago, its metropolitan region, and other great cities of the world.”   GCI presently conducts interdisciplinary urban research and education projects collaboratively focused on Chicago and other cities nationally and internationally, with a focus on urban fiscal policies, economic development, infrastructure and capital financing, and other urban planning and policy issues.  More information about GCI is available at: http://www.uic.edu/cuppa/gci/


Duties -- The Research Specialist Shall:

·         Collaborate with Principal Investigators and researchers to develop objectives and design of research projects and proposals

·         Formulate and conduct research studies and analyses. Performs complex data collection and study methods. Analyze and evaluate research results.

·         Replicate, refine and add new research approaches based on project needs. Test, customize and implement new methods and procedures.

·         Develop and write advanced, comprehensive protocols.

·         Monitor project developments on an ongoing basis. Propose and implement changes as needed.

·         Contribute material, prepare results and assist in the writing of research findings for publications, papers, presentations, grants, and other documents for publication.

·         Assist principal investigator in grant and manuscript submission.

·         Guide, train and advise lower level researchers and students on techniques, methods and procedures.

·         Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in social science or related field required. Master’s degree in Urban Planning or related social science field is preferred. Required: a minimum of 3 years related research experience; possession and application of comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
