Transportation Planner - Civiltech Engineering, Chicago

Transportation Planner II
Civiltech Engineering, Inc. is a civil and transportation engineering consultant partnering with public and private sector clients in the Chicagoland area since 1988. Our primary focus is developing transportation design solutions for our clients. Our projects involve complete streets design, urban streetscapes, bike and pedestrian trail infrastructure, plazas and green infrastructure.
We are seeking a qualified and client focused candidate to join our growing team of urban planners and landscape architects at our Chicago Loop office.
The Position
Gain experience with community engagement and continue to acquire skills in:
  • Municipal client coordination; prepare PowerPoints and exhibit boards; listen to, record, and summarize community feedback, present at open houses and community workshops, organize focus groups and listening sessions.
  • Develop technical and policy writing skills.
  • Format reports and plans using the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Continue gaining quantitative and data analytic skills, including the ability to perform basic statistics on large datasets with Excel and database software.
  • Develop network-wide roadway recommendations at varying scales (e.g. municipal and county).
  • Further learn how plan-making, program design, as well as problem formulation and solving can be applied to planning, urban design and traffic projects.
  • Understand the interplay of land use and demographics in transportation planning.
  • Use community engagement online platforms to build project websites and interactive maps.
  • Continue learning and applying best practices in complete streets design, including NACTO, FHWA, AASHTO, MUTCD, etc. standards.
  • Assist in preparing visuals for project proposals.
  • Understand and uphold the values and ethics of being a consultant planner in municipalities.
  • Strive to understand and work within project schedules.
  • Prepare plans, maps, and data analysis reports under the direction of Project Manager or more experienced planner.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Urban and Regional Planning or Urban Planning and Policy (Required)
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in transportation planning (Preferred)
  • Advanced experience working in GIS Software, including ArcMap, and laying out plans using the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • A desire to improve public spaces and transportation corridors in urban and suburban settings through the planning and implementation of innovative designs that balance the needs of all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, freight, and cars.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for leading and conducting community engagement in planning and engineering studies, including: setting up and tracking project websites and online engagement maps, preparing presentations and exhibit boards, summarizing community feedback, presenting at open houses and community workshops, and organizing and leading focus groups and listening sessions.
  • Comfortable analyzing large datasets and performing statistical analyses using Microsoft Excel. Enthusiastic about and confident in learning and using technical tools to analyze data, develop recommendations, and troubleshoot.
  • Experience developing concept level rendered site plans, sections and sketches to quickly communicate design ideas for a variety of projects ranging in scale from plazas to regional planning studies (Preferred).
  • The ability to think critically and communicate effectively through written, verbal and graphic communications, including experience writing plans, technical memos and white papers.
  • Exceptional research capabilities.
  • Experience in transit and/or freight planning is a plus.
  • The ability to work independently as well as closely with other design professionals, including planners, landscape architects, engineers and surveyors to develop design solutions at a fast pace.
  • Experience with or a desire to learn Bentley MicroStation is a plus.
  • Understands and upholds the values and ethics of being a consultant planner in municipalities.
  • AICP certification or the desire to pursue certification.

The Senior Planner/Department Head position provides opportunities to lead the award-winning planning and urban design departments and be a hands-on planner and manager for a wide range of exciting projects including TODs, planning and design for mass transit and transportation projects, specific plans, master plans, EIRs, campus projects, revitalization plans, streetscape projects, pedestrian plans and community plans for both public and private sectors.
Experience and expertise in project management, as well as management of a small staff, proposal writing/business development, land use/urban planning/design in California, excellent writing and communication skills, strong physical design and policy planning, and carrying a project from conceptual design through construction documents are required.
A Master's degree in Planning or related field and at least 15 years of experience in planning/urban design are required, with at least 5 years at a private consulting firm. California experience in Specific Plans and AICP are required. Experience in transportation planning and an undergraduate degree in Architecture or Landscape Architecture are desirable.

Your Capabilities and Credentials:
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • Degree from accredited Landscape Architecture program (Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture required)
  • 3-8 years of experience, preferably in the consulting environment
  • New York registration is optional, but preferred
  • Excellent design, graphic, computer skills (AutoCad, Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Adobe required, Microstation and Illustrator a plus)
