Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Transportation Planner to work on a wide range of transportation planning issues, including long-range multimodal transportation planning, sub-area and corridor studies, land use studies and transit analyses. Fairfax County faces significant transportation challenges and is seeking innovative solutions.
Duties include: managing county transportation/land use studies; managing county participation in corridor and facility-level transportation feasibility and environmental studies; preparing, interpreting and applying travel analyses and forecasts and evaluating impacts of proposed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan, participating in and conducting public outreach efforts, giving presentations to and coordinating with elected officials, citizen groups and staff from partnering agencies.
Position may be underfilled as a Transportation Planner I; the Underfill requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section. One or more positions may be filled from this job announcement.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of experience related to transportation planning.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in planning or a related field. Strong background in transportation and land use planning. Experience in preparing long range transportation plans, evaluating transportation impacts of land use proposals, GIS, travel demand analysis, Sketch-up or other rendering software program. Familiarity with traffic operations, giving presentations, and conducting community outreach. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work in a group. The ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments, establish priorities that accurately reflect the importance of the job, and accomplish departmental goals and objectives. The ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS: This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of a Transportation Planner I (Grade S21, $48,439.04 to $ 80,731.46). The employment standards for the Transportation Planner I are: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field. Upon completion of an underfill agreement (which will require that the employee meet the employment standards stated above in addition to obtaining competencies defined by the hiring agency) the employee will be elevated to the level of a Transportation Planner II.
