The City of Elgin, Illinois seeks highly qualified planning professionals to serve as its next Senior Planner. Founded in 1836 and located 35 miles northwest of Chicago, Elgin is proud of its diversity in demographics and culture. Elgin operates under the council-manager form of government, which was adopted in Elgin in 1954. The current City Manager was appointed in 2009. The City has approximately 700 FTEs and a $275 million budget. The City Council has established eight priorities that guide city operations and policies: Diverse Workforce, Financial Stewardship, Economic Development, Education and Workforce Development, Image and Engagement, Neighborhoods and Public Safety.

Senior Planners report to the Director of Community Development and may be responsible for reviewing development applications against city codes and ordinances and ensuring that the resulting development advances well accepted planning, urban design, transportation and environmental theories and practices. Additional duties may include preparing current, long-range, transportation, community development and/or other like planning-related plans and/or studies; preparing corridor, neighborhood, and/or site-specific land plans at a variety of scales as well as the massing and preliminary designs of the buildings that could built therein; preparing staff reports and board and city council packets for annexation and/or discretionary zoning processes (map amendments, conditional uses, and variations); analyzing and implementing improvements to the development review process; serving as staff support to various boards and commissions; and supervising planners and staff in all of these functions, as well as supervising staff responsible for the administration of CDBG funds.

Job Requirements
Candidates must have a collaborative and welcoming management and community engagement style that furthers the goals of the City and enhances the City’s neighborhoods and quality of life. Successful candidates will have a passion for neighborhood development and redevelopment that incorporates citizen and stakeholder involvement. The successful candidate will be a driven self-starter with exceptional writing skills and a high comfort level speaking in front of crowds of various sizes. Keeping track of details and how they fit within the bigger picture is critical. The salary range is $85,688 to $114,831 +/- DOQ. Residency in the City of Elgin is not required. Position requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in planning, architecture, or related field plus at least 5 years experience in planning. Master’s degree in planning or related field and AICP highly desirable. Demonstrated expertise with new and emerging technologies, such as Google Sketch Up and/or Salesforce, also highly desirable. Rainready Outreach Associate - CNT - Chicago, IL

CNT is seeking an experienced and qualified outreach associate to join the RainReady team. RainReady helps people and communities manage flooding in a time of climate change.
This position is initially focused on RainReady Community planning in the south and west suburbs of Cook County to reduce urban flooding.

RainReady Community is a first-of-its-kind community planning program for neighborhoods and municipalities affected by flooding. We work with partner organizations, residents, and businesses to understand risks and find solutions. We prioritize green solutions that bring broader benefits to communities, such as jobs, recreation and nature conservation.

The RainReady Outreach Associate will design and implement outreach plans in support of the RainReady Community program. This will include coordinating partner interviews, community surveys, public meetings, and workshops. The Associate will work closely with community groups, municipal leaders, and volunteers to engage the broader community in the RainReady process.

Accountability
The RainReady Outreach Associate will report directly to the Manager of RainReady Community, and collaborate closely with other CNT staff on operations and production activities.

Responsibilities
  • The Outreach Associate will work closely with the RainReady team to implement flood resilience programs in target communities, and to expand our outreach and impact in the region and nationally. Responsibilities include:
  • Conduct partner interviews to identify primary risk areas and opportunity areas
  • Distribute and promote community surveys
  • Coordinate workshops for residents, businesses, and community groups
  • Oversee logistics and promotional materials for community outreach events
  • Attend community events on behalf of RainReady
  • Craft newsletters, public announcements, and other communications materials
  • Team support: participate in the activities of the wider RainReady team, from meeting with policy makers to attending community mapping workshops. Your work will support policy development, data analysis, risk modelling, the development of accreditation standards, workforce development, and the development of communication and outreach materials (such as factsheets, videos and photos).
  • Evening and weekend work will sometimes be necessary.
Skills and qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in urban planning, environmental science, community studies, public administration, or equivalent
  • Experience in community outreach or communications
  • Exceptional organizational and coordination skills
  • Strong interest in sustainable community development and mission-based organizations.
  • A demonstrated attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license and legally be able to drive in the state of Illinois. Company vehicle is provided for work-related travel.
  • Communications, in particular, working with clients, residents, public works officials, academics and other stakeholders. You must have good workshop presentation skills.
Desirable
Knowledge and expertise in the use of flood mitigation strategies and/or green infrastructure best management practices - within the public rights-of-way, on public land and on private property.
Experience with Salesforce, Survey Monkey, and GIS-platforms
