Job Description
The City of DeKalb, Illinois a progressive community located approximately 60 miles west of Chicago and proud home to Northern Illinois University, seeks a Principal Planner to join our team. The Principal Planner is responsible for the projects, policies, and activities which define the short term planning, zoning, and development goals and objectives for the City. This position will also implement plans to ensure the orderly growth and development of the City of DeKalb. In addition this position will be responsible for supervising the long-range planning to include comprehensive plan and sub area plans; Community Development Block Grant program and policy; and economic development strategies and actions.

The position of Principal Planner is assigned to the Community Development Department. The Principal Planner is a full-time mid-level management position under the direct supervision of the Community Development Director. The position is required to work a minimum of forty hours per week. Occasional travel of distance is also required. The Principal Planner works in an office environment with some field work. The Principal Planner will serve as a staff liaison to boards, committees, and commissions as assigned. This position requires attendance at meetings outside normal business hours and in the evenings as needed. This position routinely handles highly sensitive and/or confidential information, and will represent the City in a variety of capacities. The Principal Planner will lead and supervise a team as well as provide direct oversight to contractors.

Compensation:
The starting salary for the position is $111,000 +/- commensurate with knowledge, skills and experience. The City of DeKalb provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision and prescription benefits, life insurance coverage, HSA & flexible spending accounts, deferred compensation and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
