Development is looking for someone who has a bachelor's degree in architecture or urban design, and at least 2 years of design experience. 

Position Overview: 

The Urban Designer will perform urban design work at various scales, providing support relating to master planning, overall massing and architectural expression, streetscape, landscape, and sustainable design to the Development Department's work on multiple projects. 

Responsibilities: 
  • Plan, organize and conduct zoning, land use and urban design studies, research data, analyze conditions, prepare maps and written reports for land use policy proposals. 
  • Develop criteria and design guidelines for large-scale planning efforts and neighborhood studies.
  • Prepare conceptual designs and development design criteria, and coordinate with agency staff and other involved agencies.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of urban design and planning trends through research and field experience.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the NYC Zoning Resolution. 
  • Organize and prepare graphic and written materials, and present to department staff, community boards, elected officials and public agencies.
  • Represent the Department at community boards and other meetings to gather information and convey the Department's positions on neighborhood planning and design issues and proposals.
  • Provide urban design technical assistance and guidance to Department staff on an as-needed basis. 
  • Coordinate with other agency representatives on Department studies, projects and ULURP applications. 
  • Perform other related tasks and projects.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's Degree in architecture or urban design 
  • Some graduate level work preferred
  • At least 2 years of full-time experience in planning, design, research, investigations and/or studies related to urban design and development
  •  General computer skills, project scheduling (i.e. MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project)
  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in urban planning and development issues.
  • Ability to facilitate community outreach processes. 
  • New York City residence is required within 180 days of hire. 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Strong urban design capabilities with extensive knowledge of physical design planning practices. 
  • Knowledge of streetscape design including urban landscape and environmental graphic design.
  • Competence in free-hand sketches, computer-based drawings, 3D modeling programs, database and/or geographic information computer software. 
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage, as well as superior project management skills, including the ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to organize and lead public meetings effectively and inclusively. 
  • Strong research, analytical and organizational skills. 
  • Excellent presentation and written communication skills; experience speaking publicly and making effective presentations. 
  • Knowledge of New York City's general urban design and land use issues, policies and needs.
  • Ability to work effectively with other divisions, city agencies, community boards, elected officials and applicants. 
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work independently and communicate ideas effectively.
  •  Strong understanding of and experience with the technical aspects of the public planning and development process, preferably specific to NYC; experience with structuring and facilitating community planning processes.
  • Understanding of urban infrastructure and economic development issues

About Development:
Spearheads NYCEDC and interagency efforts on complex planning and development projects which advance the City's competitiveness, enhancing the City as a place to live, work and visit through promoting a diverse economic base; fostering vibrant, livable and accessible neighborhoods; executing keystone economic development projects; leveraging diverse waterfront assets for economic, recreational and resiliency uses; and supporting and expanding the City's freight, maritime, aviation and transit transportation networks. Specifically, Development works to identify strategic locations for public involvement and/or investment; develop and facilitate appropriate planning and community outreach processes; shape use and development. Examples of Development's role in key City initiatives can be seen in neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs, including Coney Island and Seward Park. In Coney Island, Development played a key role in implementing a 19-block rezoning which includes the revitalization of a 27-acre amusement and entertainment district, and makes strategic investments in infrastructure that unlock potential to build over 4,500 new units of housing as well as retail, services, and jobs. The NYCEDC Development team also played a pivotal role in advancing development of the former Seward Park Extension Urban Renewal Area sites and surrounding City-owned sites, including spearheading over four years of community engagement and successful collaboration between the local community and the City to plan for a new mixed-use, mixed-income development.
