The Field Museum seeks a post-doctoral Research Scientist to conduct modeling and spatial analysis focused on understanding fine-scale patterns in urban forest composition, structure, and benefits across the Chicago metropolitan region, and to assist in the development of an online interactive map to be used by the public. The position will be primarily based at the Field Museum in downtown Chicago and will be supported for 1 year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability.

The Field Museum and Morton Arboretum are working collaboratively to develop a fine-scale urban forest composition, structure, and benefits model for the greater Chicago metropolitan region. This work supports the Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI), a collaborative partnership for coordinated action on key issues facing urban trees. It is the largest such initiative in the country, with leading organizations and agencies from across the >10,000km2seven-county metropolitan region working together. CRTI is leveraging funding, knowledge, skills, and expertise to build a healthier, more diverse regional forest.

Duties and Responsibilities
develop a model of forest composition across the Chicago metropolitan region;
develop materials and resources for the distribution of this information by others to a broad audience of end users in the format of an interactive map;
work collaboratively with organizations outside of The Morton Arboretum and the Field Museum to leverage resources, integrate forest composition data from other regional, state and national efforts including:

• U.S. Forest Service Urban Tree Canopy Analysis
• Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning mapping resources and GoTo2050 Plan
• research how other organizations and agencies across the country have utilized forest composition data and build on those examples; and
• develop methods to collect additional data. Use this platform to facilitate data collection with schools and volunteer organizations. Use as a framework for a citizen science program.

Qualifications

• strong scientific thinking, reasoning and interpretation skills;
• significant working knowledge in use and interpretation of GIS tools;
• working knowledge of sound statistical approaches and methods;
• experience with and be able to conduct modeling with large data sets and perform spatial data analysis;
• ability to explain the data and analysis in such a way that it may be utilized by a wide range of audiences including regional planners, state and federal agencies, organizations, communities and individual landowners and managers;
• ability to work collaboratively with organizations and individuals outside of The Morton Arboretum and Field Museum to leverage resources for the development and update of the tools and resources;
• Ph.D. in Ecology, Forestry, Biology, Environmental Science, Geography or a related field;
• ability to effectively present results and recommendations both in written documents and through presentations to a variety of audiences.

The Dow Postdoctoral Sustainability Fellows Program is administered by the University of Michigan Graham Sustainability Institute to support full-time postdoctoral scholars committed to finding interdisciplinary, actionable, and meaningful sustainability solutions. These fellowships support a new generation of sustainability scholars who understand the necessity of collaborating across disciplines and sectors to address complex sustainability challenges. Fellowships are funded through a mix of support from the Dow program and U-M units.

The program seeks candidates working on sustainability issues at the interface of the social sciences/humanities and natural/physical/engineering sciences.

Fellowship Term:This is a two-year fellowship that follows the United States academic cycle (begins in September and ends in August).

Fellowship Award:Each Fellow receives an annual stipend of at least $52,000, U-M medical and dental benefits, and access to up to $2,000/year for research and related travel.

The UIC Honors College seeks applications for one or two positions of Honors Postdoctoral Fellow in Teaching and Mentoring for the Fall 2015 - Spring 2016 academic year, with the possibility of a one-year extension. This position is structured to provide honors undergraduates with a faculty-in-residence for teaching and mentoring resources, and to provide a new PhD with an exceptional opportunity to gain teaching and advising experience under the mentorship of the Honors College Dean and Associate Deans, in preparation for a tenure-track job, especially at an institution that values teaching.
The Fellow will teach one 3-credit freshman general education class in Fall semester and two in the Spring semester, as well as a section of the 1-credit Honors freshman seminar or junior seminar, advise a cohort of honors freshmen and some Honors Capstone thesis students, and serve as co-Director of the Chicago Signature Honors Program (an extra-curricular initiative that engages UIC Honors students in Chicago’s diverse cultural and intellectual opportunities).

Opportunity of Postdoc Fellowships in Social Science at the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM / Cepid) - April, 2nd/2015

The Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) is a Research, Innovation and Diffusion (RIDC) with support from FAPESP. It is an institution for advanced research in social science that investigates social inequalities and the formulation of public policies. It consists of a multidisciplinary group, which includes demographic researchers, political scientists, sociologists, geographers and anthropologists, whose research agenda is focused on citizens’ access to well-being. The CEM researchers work in several fields of knowledge and apply distinct methodologies in their investigations.

Postdoctoral Fellows (PD) shall conduct theoretical and/or empirical research, in addition to other regular activities, such as participation in seminars, paper writing and the dissemination of research results. The postdoctoral fellowships are expected to develop projects in one of the following themes: 

1. To understand the independent effect of State policies on social conditions and inequality reduction. 

2. To understand the role of political institutions on the decision-making of redistributive policies, particularly voting behavior and law-making process.

3. To map alternative forms of governance in urban areas and their connections to the State in order to understand "who governs what”?

FELLOWSHIPS

The opportunity is open to Brazilian and foreign candidates. It is desirable to have a PhD in Social Sciences or related fields with a strong history of publishing and good performance in spoken and written English.

The selected candidate will receive a monthly fellowship in the amount of R$ 6,143.40 and a grant, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.

The second phase will be an interview with the selection committee, when the academic merits of the proposals and candidate performance will be considered.

Candidates selected for the second phase will be contacted via email by June, 16th.

Interviews will be conducted in person or via skype on the 24th June, 2015.

The School of Social Ecology and the Metropolitan Futures Initiative (MFI) seek applications to fill a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow position in the urban social sciences.  Funding is available for up to two years, to be reviewed after the first year.  The position is expected to begin sometime early 2015.  This postdoctoral position is part of the interdisciplinary MFI project (http://socialecology.uci.edu/mfi) directed by Professor John Hipp. Candidates are required to have a PhD in such fields as criminology, urban planning, geography, sociology, or other fields related to urban/regional studies. 

We seek a self-driven, creative thinker with strong quantitative and interpersonal skills to help accomplish an important and interesting set of research tasks.  The successful candidate will supervise a team of graduate and undergraduate students working on a coordinated set of urban research projects that will manage large data sources on characteristics of the region, work on various spatial techniques in addition to traditional social science quantitative methods, and collaborate on grant writing and publications.  While training in spatial analysis skills is not essential, the ability to either learn or work with others who possess such skills is.  A working knowledge of the literature related to urban/regional studies (regardless of the specific discipline) is not required but desired; an intellectual interest in interdisciplinary study is essential. 

The postdoctoral position also entails a leadership role in the Metropolitan Futures Initiative (MFI). As part of this role, the successful candidate will take the lead in organizing the intellectual work that is the MFI Regional Progress Report, a report released every other year.  In addition, this position will allow collaborating with the faculty leadership of MFI on original research projects. 

Overall, it is expected that the postdoc will engage in high level research and be involved in analysis and publication on projects currently underway at the University of California Irvine.  The candidate would also be encouraged to maintain an independent set of research interests.  The role will be supported by a vast array of resources at the University of California, Irvine.
