Summary

Under general supervision, Community Outreach Coordinators will coordinate and perform community outreach activities for District Councils, help plan and organize District Council public meetings, support District Council efforts to improve public health and public safety and address concerns about policing in the police and perform related duties as required. 

 

Under an ordinance passed by the Chicago City Council in July 2021, District Councils will be created in each of the city’s 22 police districts and will be made up of three people elected in regular municipal elections beginning in February 2023. The District Councils’ roles include: building stronger connections between the police and community at the district level, where the community is a true partner in making the community safer; holding monthly public meetings where district residents can work with the police on local initiatives, and raise and work to address concerns about policing in the district; working with the community to get input on police department policies and practices; and providing input to the citywide Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, a citywide, community-based oversight body with the power to advance systemic reform.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

 

  • Provide day-to-day support to District Council members 

  • Provide support to District Council members in planning monthly and special public meetings 

  • Provide logistical support for District Council meetings, including helping to secure meeting locations, draft and distribute meeting notices, develop meeting agendas, draft and edit meeting minutes, and set up and take down meetings 

  • Help to ensure that District Council public meetings run smoothly, in accordance with parliamentary procedure and District Council bylaws 

  • Support District Council community outreach and education efforts  

  • Build and nurture relationships with people, organizations, and institutions throughout the district to help ensure that District Council members are well-informed about community concerns and to encourage broad participation in District Council meetings, activities, and initiatives 

  • Help to facilitate productive working relationships between District Councils and the Chicago Police Department  

  • Help District Council members to plan and carry out projects, programs, and activities

Location:          2 N, LaSalle St. Suite 725 

Days:                40 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends. 

Hours:              9:00am – 5:00pm with some workdays 12:00pm – 8:00pm.

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education, Training, and Experience

 

§  Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in the  Social Sciences or a related field plus three (3) years of community or social services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

 

§  A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required

§  Must have the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability

 

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Experience in community organizing
  • Experience working in diverse communities
  • Previous experience working with a wide range of perspective
