POSITION: Web & Digital Content Strategist

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Web and Digital Content Strategist at United Way of Metro Chicago is responsible for maintaining United Way’s websites and providing strategic recommendations for updating, building, and creating content for United Way’s websites and marketing email campaigns. The Digital Content Strategist plans, tests, and implements high-performing web content and email campaigns into goals of stakeholder engagement and online giving. In addition, the Digital Content Strategist optimizes existing content to maximize online donation conversion, accessibility, and search engine optimization (SEO).
The ideal candidate for this position would:
Primarily
• have significant experience working in/managing WordPress or similar CSM, with intermediate HTML/CSS skill
• be able to assess current website state and make optimization recommendations (i.e., SEO, plugin updates, performance, page layout structure, website integrity and compliance, digital asset management)
• be a confident copy editor and content strategist, with the ability to shorten long-form copy for web, social, and email marketing campaigns
• research and maintain best practices that improve the organization’s website and presence in search results
• have some familiarity/experience with email marketing campaigns and platforms such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Constant Contact
• serve as a subject matter expert for United Way teams looking to create effective email and website communications with measurable engagement and goal conversion
• be a great multitasker, collaborator, problem solver, and detailed oriented
Secondarily
Working with the Marketing Director:
• create and maintain successful metrics, reports, and dashboards for email and website activity
• develop email programs (campaigns and automations) to deliver defined performance goals
• analyze email and website activity to identify stakeholder intents and interests
• research and maintain best practices in email deliverability, design, and effectiveness
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Website management and optimization
• Work with teams across United Way to plan, create and manage web content that works to achieve United Way’s strategic goals while also keeping to modern SEO and User Experience (UX) best practices
• Manage ongoing content updates to the United Way websites
• Maintain and build web forms necessary for email and event registrations
• Optimize website content and organization for greatest accessibility and organic search traffic
• Manage the digital asset gallery and prepare assets for digital use
• Research and maintain best practices in tagging digital assets for accessibility and organization
• Assist with various web-related projects including, but not limited to, video closed-captioning, retiring dated/expired content, resizing images, fixing broken links, etc.
• Troubleshoot web issues and makes suggestions for improvements
• Perform day-to-day content maintenance activities
• Working closely with hosting to ensure integrity and security of the website
• Responsible for curating content for a variety of different platforms including web, mobile, and other
Email marketing and communications
• Work with Director of Marketing and across United Way departments to develop email programs (campaigns and automations) to deliver defined performance goals
• Research and maintain best practices in email deliverability, design, and effectiveness
• Design, build, and measure email campaigns for key stakeholder segments
• Develop, test, and maintain email automations to meet key stakeholder engagement goals
• Support the Digital Content and Communications Manager in maintaining the organization’s email communication schedule • Develop the back end build out and deploy monthly newsletters
Digital research
• Help build a data-driven culture by creating and maintaining success metrics, reports, and dashboards for email and website activity
• Analyze email and website activity to identify stakeholder intents and interests
• Collaborate with Digital Content and Communications Manager to plan and create email and website content that matches stakeholder interests with marketing goals
• Research and maintain best practices that improve the organization’s presence in search results and measurably convert these search results into engagement, either through newsletter sign-ups or donations
• Serve as a subject matter expert for United Way teams looking to create effective email and website communications with measurable engagement and goal conversion
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate has a background creating content for CMS-managed websites, building inbox-friendly email campaigns, and reading and interpreting analytics reports.
• Bachelor’s degree in Digital Marketing or related field of study and/or three or more years in a digital marketing or related web management role
• Three or more years of experience and a proven track record maintaining content for a large CMS-managed website and executing successful HTML email marketing campaigns
• Strong understanding of WordPress or a similar CMS
• Demonstrated skills designing and developing responsive microsites and landing pages
• Direct experience building inbox-friendly HTML email campaigns
• Proven expertise in current website content accessibility guidelines and SEO best practices
• Ability to work well in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team
• Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills
• Strong analytical and project management skills
• Detail oriented with focus on delivering results
